*Archive?* Baptism Before Civil Registration?
I have a bit of a mystery going on, the only relevant rellie I can find was registered as born AFTER the baptism date. Was this possible in England 1879?
Thanks.

Re: Baptism Before Civil Registration?
When someone is registered, firstly in the local registration office and then in the national registration office. If the child was ill and not expected to live, he might be baptised on the day he is born. He might not have been registered locally until a few days later and then it takes time for the birth registration to be recorded on the national records.
If a child was born towards the end of February, the birth may not show up on the indexes until the June Qtr. The birth certificate, will have the correct birth date.

Hi Antie Em
My rellie was born Oct/Nov/Dec 1879, would the delay still apply as in the end of February?

Hi Mini
There were only four registrations in the year Jan-Mar, Apr-June, Aug-Sept and Oct-Dec.
So if someone was born at the end of the last month in the quarter, the birth may not be indexed until the next quarter.
What are the details of the baptism you have ?

The details are:
Alfred William Burgess Birth Registration Oct/Nov/Dec 1879 volume 6d page 201. He was baptised in September 1879 according to the only info I can find.

That's it then mini - he would have been born in September and registered probably at the end of September or the beginning of October, so his birth would be indexed in the Oct-Dec quarter. His birth certificate will say September.
