What's my address ?

Post by EricTheRed »

I am trying to find what my address was.

Currently the address of my house is 175 Station Road. Station Road itself was built in 1889 and the OS map for 1905 shows that my house and a number of others have sprung up along the road. However the number 175 takes into account all the houses dating from much later in the road. So obviously at the beginning of the 20th century they would not have called my house 175.

I have identified the house on the 1910 Valuation Office map and from this have obtained a copy of the relevant pages from the valuation field book. This gives the name and address of the owner of the house, Joshua Lockwood, who I can easily find on the census. What the field book doesn"™t give is the name or number of the house.

What I am interested in is the occupier of the house "G. Smith" who is obviously renting it from Mr Lockwood. I have searched the 1911 census for George Smith, Graham Smith and Gordon Smith living in Station Road and have found no less than four George Smiths at four different houses in Station Road!

So my question is how do I find out what number or name my house had in 1911 so that I can identify which is the correct George Smith?

If the road is a long one were there pubs/ other buildings that were referred to by name that could indicate the direction taken by the enumerator and then deduce the numbers of the houses between them?

Linell,

All the Land Registry tells me is who my immediate predecessors were! Unless the Land Registry holds historic data which can be retrieved?

Maths girl,

No pubs. There are a few shops at one end and the rest are houses.

if you got the original deed will it not have some detail as to the original address and builder ?
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

I've got the two maps that they sell relating to this area. Station Road is on the 1890 map but no one has built any houses along it. The 1905 map shows several houses including mine.

if you have a morgage on the property the lender might have them or your solicitor who dealt with the sale ?

When land is registered with the Land Registry (and most of it is now) I don't think that anyone bothers with deeds anymore. Ownership is registered on the Registry's computer. I have a printout that was provided by my solicitor when I bought the place but that just shows the previous owner and so only goes back as far as 2006!

I've no idea what happens to the original paper deeds. However I've got them for my previous residence which I bought in 2006 but can't remember how I aquired them.

I've just realised what I need to do!

If I get the Valuation Office Field Book pages for the neighbouring houses then that will tell me who was living there and then I can get their addresses from the census. That will then tell me how the old numbering system worked!

I believe the contemporary expression is "Doh!"

Hi EricTheRed.
My Mrs's Parents live in a house in Wolverhampton built in 1865. The Building society had their deeds. Who ever you had your morgage through, or purchased the house through should have the original documents.
The documents revealed some interesting information, including who died in the house! So that sort of explained the shadowy figures and phantom footsteps! :P
