surnames getting changed over time and general help :-(
Hello,
I am totally new to all this however I have quickly found genealogy to be very addictive providing I am of course getting excited about the right person
Would it be possible for names to change at all ? the reason i ask is that I am searching for as much info as I can on a Florence A Aubrey (Circa 1872) who married Edwin Bates (Circa 1871) in Kings Norton. I have found a record of the wedding via the free BMD index on Ancestry however finding her death and birth is proving very difficult using the tools that I currently have available to me.
What I have found is some called Florence A Bray who was born in the correct location within the same year however would this person before Aubrey at all due to the poor spelling and literature skills of people at the time or am I chasing down a phanton?
Any help would be gratefully appreciates.
Thanks
Scott

Re: surnames getting changed over time and general help :-(
Hi Scott
Names can certainly change a bit over time - for various reasons. My gtgrandmother seems to have added an extra three first names onto her baptismal name so her death certificate looks a bit different to her birth certificate! And surnames can be mis-spelled or simply changed.
You say that you have the marriage for this couple in the Kings Norton district, and you give their approx. birth years. Do you mind if I ask how you know the birth year for Florence if you don't have her birth or death entries? How do you know that she was born about 1871?

Re: surnames getting changed over time and general help :-(
thanks for the replied,
I knew the rough year thanks to the lots of people on ancestry seeming to searching not only the same person but also thanks to the information on the 1911 census which shows both Florence, Edwin and their first son Harold who was my nans brother..
The funny thing is that my nan always told is that Harold died on the war however I have found a record of him dying in 1978 and its definitely the same person, even the wills section on ancestry shows Florences will was signed off my Harold in 1951 and the address matches..

There was maybe a family falling out, sometimes easier to say that he died, rather than having to explain why your nan didn't see her brother. We didn't see anything of my nan's eldest brother or his family, he was talked of, and possibly had died by the time I was a child- I never found out why, never thourght to ask when there were relatives around who might have answered.
As far as Ancestry goes, tread carefully as far as believing what others have on their tree. It may be a case of one person adding the wrong info and all the others copying it. A lot of people on this forum have examples of info that is way out on Ancestry. That being said, other peoples trees can help with brick walls - one of the golden rules of genealogy is always, always double check the source of the info you recieve.

Been looking at Ancestry trees this morning, adding a family from Sedgley. There are at least ten trees with the wrong information, just because they can't be bothered to get a marriage. So - they have a few generations back with the wrong bride. Obviously just copied from other people's trees.
There's no place like home ......

Trouble is when I've contacted people (in as plesant a way as I can) to help them, telling them why they've made a mistake, including dates and exact sources their trees are still the same a few years later!
It's one of the reasons my tree on Ancestry is private - it means that I can explain my sources etc when people contact me. When I've asked what other people's sources are, I quite often get the reply (if they bother to reply), that they've got the info from someone else and can't tell me the source!!

I think that the marriage at Kings Norton is unlikely to be the correct one for Edwin Bates born in 1871. If you look at the 1911 census entry then it says that Florence and Edwin had been married for 15 years. He was born in Leicester and she was born Northampton.
I think this is more likely to be the marriage entry (unless you have a maiden name for Florence from a source such as a child's bith certificate)
Marriages Jun 1895
Bates Edwin Leicester 7a 357
Gooding John William Leicester 7a 357
Moore Florence Leicester 7a 357
Russell Annie Leicester 7a 357
This is perhaps Harold's birth? That certificate would have his mother's maiden name on it.
Births Jun 1896
Bates Harold Percival Leicester 7a 317
The will which you refer to says that Florence died 13 Feb 1951 so this is most likely her
Deaths Mar 1951
BATES Florence 79 Leicester 3a 988
(her age matches the 1911 census where she was 39)
That said, I'm a bit confused about all this. The 1911 census has Harold as the only child for this couple so was your nan a late entry so to speak? And your nan said her brother Harold died in the war?

Re: surnames getting changed over time and general help :-(
tell me about it
thank you so much for all the great info - the problem I seem to have is that my nan really does not like talking about her past to anyone even my mom, the information i have is what my mom told me and even then it seems that there may be a few inaccuracies in there somewhere.
mom always said that Harold died on the war however I cant seem to see any reference to this on the military records available on Ancestry...perhaps there is something missing somewhere..
need to ensure that I am not trying to run before I can walk here and appreciate that the domino effect with Ancestry tree pinching could be a problem, is there a way of getting the certificates online quickly and with minimal cost or is it just a case of given the index numbers to the records office and waiting?
sorry for so many questions - i feel like I am only scratching the service here and an desperate to know more
P.S whats the best software to use ? should I use the online tree building site on ancestry or is there a better software which I can install on my machine?
thanks again all
