Something else I can throw in to the mix, that certainly supports the idea rather than opposes it.

William Toy b 1820 first son was called William
William Toy b 1788 first son was called William
William Toy b ? first son was called William? :)

Certainly sounds like a family traditional name.

Going upwards rather than back is much easier, so much more information is available. Yes it does look like William could be a family name. I have already checked all the Halesowen Parish Register up to 1837 and only found what I have posted on here. I have also searched the Halesowen Suit Rolls which date from the 1700's. Only one Toy on there, Widow Toy living in Hunnington Halesowen. Searching the Archives will not be easy, records get spread around some are at B'ham, some at Dudley some at Sandwell, there are also a lot of records at Worcester History Centre. You could look up that St Philips Marriage I found for Wm and Winifred at B'ham, which may tell you what Parish Wm was from, also names of any Witnesses. You can write to B'ham Archives and ask for a print out of that Marriage, you need to give them all the details, they charge about £4.00 for this Service, good luck anyway, let us know how you get on. So your saying if I go back up, I may find a string that could possibly bring me back down to fill in some gaps?

I did mean it is easier to search between 1841 and 1911, but yes you can find out information which helps you to go back too. I have a GtX5 Grandfather born 1734 who I found out was a Baptist, I searched the Baptist Records and found that he was the Pastor (Vicar) of Coppice Church Dudley. I went to visit the Church where they gave me a Souvenir Handbook, in there was an article about my GtX5 Grandfather, he had walked the length and breadth of Britain raising funds to build the Church, returned to Dudley with blood soaked Boots apparently, yes they were hard times. The Handbook also gave me some details on his family and his death. Also have a Methodist Souvenir Book from Cradley that names my GtX3 Grandfather who was a Trustee of the Chapel, has a picture of him too. There is also a great Cradley Book called 'Mirror of the Flock' where the Vicar of Cradley in 1857 and 1864 did his own Census of the Parishioners, a lot of my family are in there. If you dig around hard enough you can find out all sorts of information, happy hunting :!:

Yes that's exactly what I want to do.

I just think I am too close to say that Wm and Elizabeth are not my ancestors.

But I also have Edwin who disappeared at the turn of the century, where did he go? and also where did my Wm Toy b 1820 come from, who was his mother? None of which will do much to giving me info about Wm Toy b 1788 - but you never know.

I also want to write back stories for my own pleasure, even if they are not entirely factual, they will be based on known facts. Like who there neighbours were, what they may have done of an evening, etc....

Hi,

First of all can I say I'm not putting any pressure on the BCC site, its up to you how you connect things there, so hope you don't think I was doing that.

Even if there is a Wm Toy as a witness on the marriage certificate, it won't necessarily mean anything will it? I know there are a number of Wm Toy's in Halesowen during the 19th century, some of which are not connected to my direct line.

Just looking through Halesowen Burials for something else, and came across these, so thought I would put them on here:-

Page 430 Entry No 11 James Tay 9 Weeks The Hill

Ok, so who am I getting the marriage cert for? Wm b est 1788? I already have details for his marriage to Sarah Smart, perhaps it would be useful to find the marriage to Winnefred Foley, kill 2 birds with one stone because that may be Wm b 1820 's mother.

Recommend anything else? What do I do about parish records? Do I need to come down to the Church's or are they in some archives in a central building?

Think we have been over this on previous posts Nick. Before searching the Archives you need to know what you are looking for and who holds it. Linell.

Ok, Wm Toy b 1839, son of John Toy who we believe may or may not be Wm Toy b 1788 brother.

So by doing this I get to find Rosannah's maiden name, and therefore it makes it easier to find a marriage?

Can't we just find a marriage by searching John Toy?

Hi Jan, how kind are you ordering someone else's birth certificate.

Yes I am sure that burial is John husband of Rosannah. The other John from Dudley who is Married to a Jane, I found his bap at St Thomas 1797, he was John Salt Toy, so I don't think he connects.

John who Married Rosannah I think connects to Wm Toy somehow, just concerned about that burial in 1797, but it could be an older family member :?: John was 40 in 1841 and 50 on the Burial Register, so a bit out for a 1795 birth :?:

Going shopping will be back later.
