Re: Ancestry Transcriptions
I seem to send a couple of corrections a week to FreeBMD. The latest one was one half of a marriage that was as clear as a bell on their photo, all the surrounding entries had been made, just this one missed out.
Ancestry seem to make the same mistakes time after time, I thought it was because they were using OCP to do their transcriptions.

Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.

At least FMP look at the corrections we suggest, mostly they seem to agree with me!

Re: Ancestry Transcriptions
It wouldn't be so bad if their mistranscriptions were obvious, ie the census image or if the writing isn't clear, but some of the mistakes are glaringly obvious. Such as a census taken in Londonderry, Oldbury, Worcestershire and the place of birth being given by the householder as Londonderry - was transcribed as Place of birth - Londonderry in Ireland. This was indexed as such, so if someone was looking for Oldbury as the place of birth, in the county of Worcestershire, or in Staffordshire where some people might think it is - they would most certainly not look for that person as being born in Ireland.

Don't worry Nessa - they will be checked and if there is a mistake will be sent back to you for correction, the same as happens with FreeBMD. Another thing in your favour is that you fully understand the English language and have an idea of the geography of the UK

They won't alter it Pete - but you can leave a Postem (alteration) if you go through FreeBMD. I know it's part of the same organation, but it is still run separately, with volunteers adding the information. When I used to be a volunteer years ago, the information was checked after it was entered and if a mistake was found, sent back to the volunteer for alteration. If the person who entered it (you can see this in the "info" symbol against the entry) is no longer a volunteer, then it's added as a postem.
some one altered it on freebmd or got it correct in the first place ?
