Middleton - Stafford

Post by Karren »

I am looking for birth/baptism evidence for

Johanna/Joanne MIDDLETON

What I know and have :

1835 Marriage to Thomas Dale, Saint Marys, Handsworth, Stafford
1841 Residence St Mary and St Chad Stafford
1851 Residence St Mary Stafford BORN 1814 - City Of Lichfield
1861 Residence St Mary Stafford BORN 1815 - Farewell, Staffordshire. Also in residence is Alice Middleton Sister born 1811 Farewell Staffordshire
1871 Resdince St Mary Stafford BORN 1814 - Burntwood, Staffordhsire Also Alice Middleton born 1811 Burntwood, Staffordshire
1881 Residence St Mary Stafford BORN 1815 - Chorley, Staffordshire
1882 Death Born 1814

I have found a Middleton family in Farewell, Staffordshire but via Alice, but none of the sisters fit within the 1814/15 timeframe, and the family group all seem to have baptism records, except Joanne/Johanna.

I have tried all the variant spellings, I even tried John, so I am hoping that a fresh perspective may be the order of the day, any suggestions would be wonderful.

Thank you
Karren

Have you noticed that in the 1851 census she is marked as blind or deaf/dumb yet she is a Screw (Prison Officer) in 1871.

In the 1861 census, Alice is marked as deaf.

Alice Middleton was christened at St Bartholomew Farewell - 5.1.1811 Father Thomas Middleton.

Stafford Archives have a Souvenir Book on St Bartholomew, I would try and find all available Documents for Farewell you may find quite a bit on the Middleton family. I live near Farewell, it is only a Hamlet even today, so there couldn't have been that many people there in 1811.

I obtained a copy of the marriage entry today - I braved the torrential rain through the city of Brum, it is June isn't it?

The Entry of Marriage was witnessed by

Charles Middleton
Susannah Dale

I did consider this was her second marriage, and although I did some research and can't rule it out completely, I am pretty certain this is her first marriage.

I had seen she was marked deaf/dumb but she is a Schoolmistress in 1851 so am thinking this perhaps just an oddity!

Thank you for the info about Farewell, I am pretty new to the genealogy, so am just finding my feet in the record offices and what is or isn't available, so I am always grateful for handy hints.
