COMPLETED William Ward - Lime Burner

Supposedly my great-great grandfather.

Great-grandfather (also William) was born about 1828 in Stoke Ash Suffolk (maybe illigit). On his two marriage certificate gives father's name as William and occupation lime burner. I can find no trace. According to the parish register mother's name given as Ann but there is no trace of her after the baptism. Anyone got any ideas where I may extend my search, please?

I see in the baptism his name is listed as William Ward-Murry Ward.

Any significance to the Murry bit?

The Murry family seems to be mainly around the Ipswich area.

Does the parish have any bastardry records surviving?

Thank you for that Mark. I knew of the baptism record, hence my comment 'maybe illigit'. As far as I know there is no link in the family with Murry, but it is interesting that they exist in the Ipswich area. How likely is it that an illigit would be baptised in 1828?

The William Ward to whom you refer is, as far as i have established, from Needham Market and married a Sophia in 1840. He had a neice Ann :shock:

but I hope that is not the same Ann!. But who knows, there seems to be some cover up.

Baptising illigitimate children was no less common than those born in wedlock.

A unmarried mother did not want to risk her childs immortal soul because of her indiscretion.

Not only that, if a woman wanted compensation from the father they had to go via the church anyway!

The bastardry records are a good source of information if they still exist for that parish.

Does anyone have any information on Southwick Stables. Paddington in 1855, please? This is the address given by William Ward and his then wife to be Sarah Jarrett on their marriage certificate.

who were the witnesses on this marriage cert do they give a clue ?
