ARC TBC..............Sweet Turf, Dudley - Morrall family

Post by Blacksmith »

As can be seen in the information below, my Morrall family were in Birmingham at the time of the 1841 census, but by 1846 they had moved to the Sweet Turf area of Dudley when my ancestor, Esther Morrall was born. However, by 1851, William Morrall had died and the family had moved. I would be interested if anyone can give any further information about Sweet Turf, apart from the little snippet I have reproduced below. Also, if anyone know of any mining disasters that could have been responsible for William's death - just a guess. I might end up purchasing the death certificate to see if it is the correct William.

1841 Census "“ Lordswood Road, Birmingham
William Morrall, 35, Ag lab, Out of county
Elizabeth Morrall, 30, Out of county
Sarah Morrall, 4, In county
William Morrall, 2, In county
Esther Rew, 9, In county

Their daughter, Esther, my ancestor, was born at Sweet Turf, Netherton, Dudley:
13.5.1846 - birth in the sub-district of Dudley (7:53 a.m.)
Sweet Turf
Esther, William MORRALL (Miner) & Elizabeth MORRALL (formerly TATTON)

Sweet Turf is an area of Netherton, just to the north of the town centre, around St Giles Street. A description of the area reads: You come to a forlorn little triangular space of ground studded with clothes lines and refuse heaps, and hedged on two sides by wretched tenements of the usual kind, and perceive that the spot is called "˜Sweet Turf."™ No name could befit it less; yet there it is.

This could very well be the record of William"™s death: - Jun 1848, Dudley (18, 239) Unfortunately, the age at death is not shown so I can't be sure.

A book I have "Netherton Edward I to Edward VIII" by M.H.W. Fletcher, Dudley Public Libraries Transcriptio No. 15 states

"....There were four pools fed by springs from which the people fetched their water, with trees growing around them. One opposite Little's Factory, one opposite "The British Oak", Sweet Turf......These except private wells, supplied Netherton for 300 years, with domestic water....."

Also "The Origins of Names" in the same book "Sweet Turf - from the Sweet Turf Farm there."

If you have a look at Dudley Archives & Local History Service web site at at www.dudley.gov.uk/archives on the right hand side under "On Line Services" click on Historic Mapping, follow the instructions and you will be able to see a map of Sweet Turf. You could also contact the Archives to find out what information they have on Sweet Turf.

I have these details from a Netherton Book:-

Sweet Turf is something of an anomaly for such a heavily industrial area, but its derivation was the succulent quality of the pasture near the pool in an area once known as the Pleck - the latter of which was built upon and became Recreation Street. Incidentally, Sweet Turf Baptist Chapel came about after an ecclesiastical fall out between members of the Baptist End Chapel in 1810. After the split, the converts to this particular offshoot were dunked in their own bit of the canal. Sweet Turf got it's name from Sweet Turf Farm.
