*Arc tbc* ---Armitage Brick Wall

Post by mumbles »

I have tried all usual tricks to get round this brick wall but following Census records will show that problem is not helped by changes in name and places of birth.

1851 Census Penyrallt Street Machynlleth Montgomershire
George Holloway Grocer 45 born Westbury Wilts.
Cathrine Holloway 25 born Machynlleth
George Holloway 1 born Ditto
Elizabeth Rees 22 Servant born Ditto
G.R.Armitage 51 Private Gentleman born Ross, Herefords .
Jam. E. Armitage 42 born Ludlow Shrops.

Note:- Jam looks like Jane and Ludlow is near Longville Shrops.

1861 Census 6, Conway Street, Birkenhead , Cheshire
John G. Armitage 61 Barrister at Law ( not practising) born Barford Hall, Norfolk
Jane E. Armitage 52 born Longville Castle Shrops.
Margaret Jenkins 23 Servant born Birkenhead Cheshire

1871 Census 86, Camden Street, Birkenhead, Cheshire
John G. Armitage 74 Barrister at Law ( not practising) born Surrey England
Jane E. Armitage 52 born Shrops.
Maira Armitage Grd. Dau. 8 born Surrey England
Sarah. A. Moor 18 Servant born Cheshire

1871 Census Sutton Village Eastham ,Wirral , Cheshire
Bertie Armitage 10 Scholar at Boarding School born Birkenhead Cheshire

1881 Census 86 Camden Street Birkenhead Cheshire
Elizabeth Armitage widow 73 Annuitant born Longville Shrops.
Bertie Armitage grd. Son 20 Oil Man Trade born Liverpool Lancs.
Myra Armitage grd. Dau. 18 born Liverpool , Lancs.
Sarah Merna 25 servant born Ireland

Myra went on to marry an Edward Knowles and on subsequent Census records is shown as Myra and born in Birkenhead Cheshire.
Known by descendants as Mair Knowles ( nee Armitage)

What I am tring to do is identify parents of Bertie and Myra Armitage as they seem to disappear and leave children in boarding school or with elderly grandparents.
I have not been able to find grandparents on 1841 Census

Hi peterd,
Tried 1861 and only one possible was :-
1 , Albert Road Liverpool West Derby Lancs.
Abraham Wardle aged 27 Corn Porter born Derby Dove Hud.
Sarah Wardle 27 born Wadsley Yorks.
Robert Armitage boarder born Liverpool Lancs. aged 0 ( 5mths.
Also checked Births between 1860 and 1862 and Robert born 1861 West Derby is only possiblity.
Checked 1862 to 1863 Births and no Myra Found.
Could it be possible these two were orphans and were adopted by Armitage family ?

Thanks Marie and Peterd , That gives me something to work on . This info ties up with fact that grandson of Myra Armitage was called Robert George when born in 1931.

Found Jane Elizabeth Beddoes christened Winstantow Shrops. 6/5/1807 Parents Thomas Beddoes and Jane Marston.
Wintanstow is next door to Longville which ties up with later Census records for Jane Elizabeth.
I cannot find marriage for Robert and Emma or what happened to them after birth of Bertie or Myra/Maira Armitage

Is this still a Brick Wall?
Or have you solved it?
