Rev. Stephen John Rabone, missionary in Tonga in 1800s

Post by expat66 »

Just stumbled across this interesting character while researching my Rathbones.
( It appears that my Rathbones may have originally been Rabones from Wolverley, Worcs)

I believe that this Rev Stephen John Rabone was born in Tipton around 1811 .. parents Thomas Rabone and Hannah according to some trees on Ancestry?
I think the parents came from Wolverley, Worcs? .... can't find the evidence to tie Stephen to them though :?

This looks like Thomas and Hannah .....

1841 census
Tipton, Staffordshire, England
Thomas Rabone,60, iron refiner,
Hannah Rabone,70, neither born in County,
Elizabeth Gould,19, f.s. born in County.
Note:- looks like their son Thomas lives next door with his wife and daughters.

Stephen John Rabone was a Methodist Minister and spent 15 years in Tonga ( between 1835 and 1850) .... he was actually shipwrecked the first time he and his wife attempted to travel there!
He later moved to New S. Wales, Australia with his family.

Does anyone have any more info. on this Rev Rabone or on the Rabones of Tipton or Wolverley?

Thankyou

Looking at that 1841 census again...
I think Thomas and Hannah have a son living in the house on one side of them and a daughter living in the house next door on the other side...

Tipton, Staffordshire, England
Thomas Rabone,30, refiner of iron, born in County
Elizabeth Rabone,30, not born in County,
Elizabeth Rabone,9, born in County,
Hannah,3, not born in County

next door....

Tipton, Staffordshire, England
Thomas Rabone,60, iron refiner,
Hannah Rabone,70, neither born in County,
Elizabeth Gould,19, f.s. born in County.

and next door to them...

Tipton, Staffordshire, England
Joseph Foster,30, moulder,
Julia Foster,30,
Stephen Foster,8,
Joseph Foster,6,
Louisa Foster,2.
All born in County

I think Julia may be daughter of Thomas...
extracted info. from IGI ... Christening of Julia Rabone, parents Thomas Rabone and Hannah....12 FEB 1809 Tipton, Stafford, England

and submitted info. from IGI ... marriage of Julia Rabone and Joseph Foster.... 20 JUL 1829 Tipton, Stafford, England

There is also this Extracted info. for a Thomas..
Thomas Rabone son of Thomas Rabone and Hannah ..... Christening..27 SEP 1807.... Tipton, Stafford, England

and this Extracted info. for marriage ...
Marriage of Thomas Rabone and Elizabeth Gell ....12 APR 1830 All Saints, West Bromwich, Stafford, England
