Neville Bastable wrote:About my grandfather's two elder brothers the oldest Edward Charles Bastable married Comfort Siviter on 28th June 1875 at St Thomas's Church, Dudley. They originally lived in Blackheath but moved to Coseley where they lived I think for thev rest of their lives.
I believe they had 8 children namely Sally (1880), George (1885), Joseph (1887), Samuel (1888), Sampson (1893), Agnes (1891), John (1894) and Myra (1896). I can only speak on the descents of two of these. I know that Joseph and his wife Clara moved to Wolverhampton where their descendants I understand still remain. John and his wife Clara moved to the Stoke on Trent area where I am in present day contact with the family.
As regards Charles Edward Bastable and his marriage to Ruth I am grateful for the previous posting as I did not have these details. I do know however that they continued to live in Blackheath and I believe that their 6 chidren were Mary (1880), Charles (1881), Sarah (1881), Sampson (1883), William (1886) and Sam (1889).
This is a time when I now regret not having asked my grandfather about all this because I believe they were a “close” family but like most youngsters I suppose I wasn't interested in such things then. Finally although I have no reason to suppose not, research on some of the above listed children was done by other family members and I haven't checked it out, so I cannot guarantee it's accuracy.
Can I remind Bastable researchers that a common mistake in official documents like the census and parish registers is that our name was in the past sometimes written as Basterfield or similar particularly in the Halesowen area where there were” more of them than us” to be found. The names I am reliably informed have completely different origins and are not interchangeable.

Not quite sure how much of this is being added......but hopefully Neville will be joining the Connections soon
and can add his information.

As far as using Bastable and Basterfield we are using the 2 surnames
Use notes to add any additional info.
Some good info here needs to go on the tree

Many thanks for the great response to this topic which I started as a first effort. One or two queries have cropped up. Firstly Caroline Bastable (1838) was Edward Sampson's (1833 ) cousin. Her father Sampson (1794) who up to now I haven't mentioned in this topic, worked in France. There is quite an interesting story attached to that branch of the family but perhaps now is not the time to tell it. There was also a mention of Myra Edith (1865) and her husband Samuel Bastable not on the census. I don't know why this was because I believe they lived around the Blackheath area most of their lives mostly Causeway Green Road I think. I did know their great granddaughter Pauline Bastable but I've lost contact now.
Whilst mentioning Myra Edith it is interesting I think that although I believe Edward Sampson (1833) was a successful builder, he and Myrah (1833) did not have enough room for their large family at 88 High Street, Blackheath so Myra Edith (1865) and her sister Sarah Ann were farmed out “in service” and Edward Charles (1855) in fact went to live with his grandparents in Hayseech, Haden Hill.
Perhaps I might take this opportunity to list my grandfather's younger brother's chidren. He was of course Sampson Bastable (1871) who married Jane Foster. Their children were Maria (1892), George (1894), Sarah (1896), Edward(1897), Lily (1898) and Nellie (1900).
My grandfather Samuel Edward Bastable(1860-1943) himself who married Matilda Massey (1862-1922) had children Samuel (1886),
Edith (1889), Henry (1892), Amy (1899) and Joseph Clarence (1901).
He was my father.
I hope to be joining Connections soon and will be able to add info to the Tree. I would like to introduce my mother's mother's family the Binghams, nailers of Lye Waste who we trace back to 1687.
Neville Edward Bastable.
