ARC TBC - Parish Records in the Black Country

Post by Dig »

Hi everyone

Can you please help me with these questions I have about parish records.

I have found some results for ancestors on the family search website but it does not always say which church an event took place in. Sometimes it only says the location was Dudley, Halesowen or Rowley Regis. If I want to view the original records do I look under the parish church for each area e.g. if a baptism took place in Rowley Regis does it mean it took place at the parish church of St Giles?

Sometimes I can not find a match for an ancestor on the family search website but I can on FreeBMD. I know that the location where an event was registered may not be where it occurred. Is there any way I can find out which church the event took place in if I know where it was registered? I have events registered in Dudley and Stourbridge.

Sometimes I get more than one match for an ancestor on the family search website. If I am looking for a baptism and I do not know the parents names is there any way of proving which one is the correct record? I am looking for the Baptism of John Parkes born about 1800 in Rowley Regis. He is about 40 in the 1841 census and he never married.

Any help is appreciated

HI Dig

Ok the Parish records on IGI if you use the old site
Which I can't open the link for at the moment
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/ ... search.asp

and you find a marriage and it says Extracted
that means taken from the Parish Register.

We use those as being good info.

If it says Dudley and extracted then it is prob St Thomas Dudley
if it says Halesowen then prob St Johns
if it says Rowley Regis then St Giles

if you want to know a Church this site is good
http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk/

Click on marriages and
then search marriage index
Then search by name
then put in your year and name
with or without soundex

it gives you a year church and a ref no the end no is the page in the parish Register so you you look
up that marriage in that particular Church Register and go straight to the actual page

Hi FarSide
Can you post the 1841 you have for John Parkes

John Parkes born about 1802 in Rowley Regis. Living in Waterfall Lane, Rowley Regis with partner Phebe. Children also living with John are Elizabeth, Mariah, Samuel and Eli. This is a strange connection and I am unsure whether John Parkes is the father of all the children because their surname changes to Batey in 1851. I am descended from Eli Batey born about 1828 in Rowley Regis and his daughter Ann Maria Batey. I am trying to find out who Eli's father was so I can find his baptism.

So it is this one on Bcc

http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tr ... =341073736

We dont have a bapt for Eli Batey/Batty
but bro Samuel on marriage has this
Samuel Bayte, 20, Bach, Miner of Waterfall Lane son of John Parkes, a Collier
Elizabeth Williams, 21, Spinster, Nailer, of Waterfall Lane, Daur of Thomas Williams, Nailer
Wit: Thomas Westwood and Maria Bayte

it seems possible that father for Eli is John Parkes

Hi Northern Lass

it seems possible that father for Eli is John Parkes

Thanks for the link. I have looked at the information on bcconnections and I was wondering:

1) How can we proove all of the children on the 1841 census are John and Phebe's because no relaionships are given?
2) Why do most of these childrens christening and marriage records not state John as the father if we believe he was?
3) If Phebe was about 35 when she had Elizabeth couldn't she have been married earlier i.e. is Pheby Batey her married or birth name?
4) In the 1871 census Eli's partner Sarah is a widow. Do you think they could have got married? I found this marriage:
Eli Perks married Sarah Ann Hall 1864 registered in stourbridge

Thanks for your help

I would at least order the birth certificate for Mary Ann:-

March Qtr 1841:- Baitey Mary Ann Dudley 18 296

Phoebe Batty was probably in a previous relationship, as for the parentage, that is something only Phoebe would know, they did put anything down on their Marriage Entries, i.e. made up father's names or put down Step Father's as their Father, even Grandfather's sometimes. Good luck, sounds like you will need it :!:

Hi Dig

I remember looking at this lot nightmare!

As Linell says suggest you get that birth certif for Mary Ann Battey.

That marriage you flag is not correct if you look on that link I gave you you will see who married whom
ie
1864
HALL Sarah A THEBRIDGE Joseph Oldswinford, St Mary Dudley Register Office 003/008/14
and
1864
PERKS Eli HILL Phoebe Oldswinford, St Mary Dudley Register Office 003/008/13

We know Sarah is a Hill as she is with her sister on one of the census.

I am moving the kids over to unknown at the moment for Phebe Batty/Batey.

Might have to be that you get a load of certifs
ie poss death for Phebe in 1864 would be useful to see her age at death.

I dont think we found a marriage for Phebe and JOhn Parkes.

Re Eli again couldnt see marriage for him and Sarah Hill
and again you would need some certifs for his kids to check for yourself mothers name.

We have looked up some of the marriages but 2nd marriages are useful as they sometimes have more info.
eg
poss second marriage but needs tbc. 1866 WESTWOOD Elizabeth BAGLEY Joseph Amblecote, Holy Trinity Dudley Register Office 015/002/192

sometimes the fathers name is added in later years.....then again :(

this could be birth for Mary ann you would need to check with the Sandwell regis office say you only want it if mother is Phebe
She was about 50 then when she had Mary Ann.

poss....1840
BAITEY Mary A Rowley Regis Sandwell Register Office RR/3/459

Hi Northern Lass
As Linell says suggest you get that birth certif for Mary Ann Battey.

I do not think Mary Ann Battey is the youngest child of Phebe. She is Phebe's grandaughter by her daughter Elizabeth and Thomas Westwood. Phebe's youngest child was Eli Batey born about 1828 but we cannot find his christening.

That marriage you flag is not correct if you look on that link I gave you you will see who married whom

I see what you mean. Do you think Sarah said she was a widow in 1871 so she could change all of her childrens names to Batey even though she did not marry Eli?

Do you have the info on Ann Maria Hill /Batey

who did she marry?

I do not have the birth certificate of Eli's daughter Ann Maria Batey. Could this be her:
Ann Maria Bailey Hill birth registered March Qtr 1861 Dudley 6c 6 ?

Ann Maria Batey married Noah Roberts at St Johns, Dudley in 1882. On the marriage certificate she is recorded as Maria Batie living in Netherton, father Eli Batie. I can not find Ann Maria after 1861 but she might have been living in Netherton in the 1881 census just before she got married. She might be recorded as Maria Hill as a lodger or servant. I think Ann Maria is already on Black Country Connections as Maria Bate.

However I have some info on the marriage for a Mary Ann Batty to Wm Belcher ...mother is Elizabeth Westwood.
Will fill in later

They would put what ever they wanted to be known as on Census.
Her children could be regis as both a Hill or a Batty ...without getting certifs impossible to know.

1860
HILL Ann M B Rowley Regis Sandwell Register Office RR/31/237

then regis in 1861 Jan hence on free bmd
Births Mar 1861
Hill Ann Maria Bailey Dudley 6c 6

How do you Know that Mary Ann is not dau of Phebe if you havent got the certif?

On 1851 census Mary Ann is not listed as son or daughter but Eli is. She is just listed as lodger. Also in 1841 she does not have surname Parkes like other children.
The marriage for her....does it actually say on certif Maria Batie? or Maria Bates?

I have a copy of the original parish record and it looks like Maria Batie. It was transcribed wrong.

I think Eli's first wife Eliza Johnson died in either 1857 or 1858 because they are the only registered deaths that match. Does that mean Ann Maria and Samuel must be Sarah Hill's children? If Sarah is recorded as a widow in 1871 Eli probably died between 1861-1871. I found this:
Eli Batty death registered 1863 Dec Qtr Stourbridge 6c 94

Are there any christenings for Phebe's children that have the father recorded?
