Its a Golden Possum. They only live in Tasmania where there are no predators to notice their not very good camouflage caused by a genetic defect, a bit like being albino.

In Victoria they are a grey colour and I have about ten living around my property along with their bigger cousins, the Brushtail.

They will live in your walls and ceilings if you do not block every possilbe point of entry. You are not allowed to remove them from your property so I ended up buying a heap of Possum Houses which they seem to be comfortable with.

They are not a native animal in NZ so they hunt them by the thousands but still can't eliminate them.

In Victoria we can take a captured Possum to be euthanized at the vets but there is no way anybody looking into those eyes could do that.

We've one who walks across our verandah each night checking for moths on the windows. He doesn't seem to take any notice of us at all. They do have the sweetest little faces, but make a heck of a racket running all over the roof in their footy boots.

They do not taste too bad if you cook them the aboriginee way under the hot coals.

Better than wombat anyway....

Partly, but one of the best ways to deal with unwanted animals is to eat them. If they become a staple part of the diet they reduce in numbers pretty rapidly. Do we do that here with our vermin problem? I can think of a couple of rats I'd like to feed into a mincer :evil:
