The famous Cradley Heath Penn's Ironworks' boiler explosion of 1906 heads a list of major events of the past that occurred locally and were found in an old notebook that belonged to reader Fred Shaw's granddad:
The Bugle Published: 01/02/2007 00:00
"Boiler explosion kills two - July 4th 1906. The two who died were John Penn from Quarry Bank and John Beddard from Old Hill. One portion of the boiler weighing 3 tons was blown into Hammersley's yard near Four Ways Church."
"Dastardly deed at Victoria Road, Quarry Bank. Edmund Clarke murdered by his father-in-law Joe Jones, on Saturday December 1st 1906 with a poker. The victim's throat was also cut."
"Trouble and strife at Cradley Forge Ironworks as it closes down - December 8th 1906."
"To the relief of many in Cradley Heath, a public lavatory opens at the top of Lomey Town - April 18th 1907."
"G.W.R. opens new goods station at Reddall Hill, Cradley Heath - July 1st 1907."
"Tragedy at the seaside for three locals. Mr J. W. Gillam, Dolly Gillam, and her fianc Ernest Taylor, all from Stourbridge, drown in horrific accident at Blackpool - June 25th 1907"
"Cradley Heath gets a new post office and opened its doors in Cradley Road for the first time on Saturday September 28th 1907."
"Two young lads, Oliver Amos and Alec Walker, are killed on the railway at Old Fields - July 10th 1909."
"A grizzly death occurred at the railway station in Cradley Heath after William Smith of Foxoak Street fell between the platform and the train and was killed instantly - August 22nd 1910."
"More entertainment available for Cradley Heath folk as the Royal Theatre in Bank Street opens - February 3rd 1913."
