Hurley, Lenton, Wood, Bastable families of Oldbury

Post by Dennis »

I wonder if it might be possible to join up some of the Hurleys with other Oldbury families on BCC? My half first cousin once removed William Bernard Wood married Julia Hurley; my grandfather Thomas Wood knew the Lenton family well - William b. 1871 and his son Tommy b. 1904, William's wife Mary Tucker was from Limerick and Tom Wood, being both a Roman Catholic and English, was interested in discussing with Tommy all sides of the troubled political situation in Ireland in the 1920s; there may be a Bastable connection there too with the Hurleys. This is what I have, with the usual apologies for errors and omissions. (Oldbury, by the way, was part of Halesowen and indeed was in Shropshire, in the 1820s):

Just a couple of footnotes, the first a very sad one:

Annie Hurley b. abt 1894 married Thomas H Stevens b. 1894 West Bromwich in abt. Dec 1934 in West Bromwich. They had a daughter Nellie J Stevens b. abt. March 1935. Nellie and her mother were killed in the Blitz in about December 1940.

William Bernard Wood and Julia née Hurley's daughter Kathleen M Wood married a John William Bastable. I wonder if there could be a connection with Sarah Hurley's son?

Many thanks, RF, and how fascinating, queeny, that you should be related! Yes, I'm completely wrong about Annie, queeny  : the Annie who was killed in the Blitz was the daughter of Albert Hurley b. 1869, she was born about 1909, married Thomas Stevens in 1934. The Annie you mention was indeed Sarah Hurley's sister, both born in Oldbury in 1894.

From what I can see on your thread here Dennis ...he did marry Sarah Hurley and was the son of John and Florence Bastable

I would like to add them to BCC but still not 100% sure where the John married to Florence are .... is it this John here.. born in 1869 ?

On the face of it, Expat, he is indeed the son of John and Priscilla in Rowley. It looks like he was registered in Dudley in about October 1868.
