How to trace orphans left in care of guardian?
I have established that my ggg grandfather Alexander Jackson and his siblings Thomas, John and MaryJane were left orphaned, as young children, by the death of both parents in 1832-4, while living in Holland (as British subjects). Their father, Thomas Jackson, made provision before he died for an English relative Matthew Jackson, (uncle I think) to be their legal guardian. (There were no other family members living in Holland.) I have copies of the will and testament of Thomas, who was a well to do merchant, and who knew he was dying, made shortly before his death. The will refers to his relative, Matthew Jackson of London (retired), as being made guardian, which is in itself a bit of a surprise as the English relatives all lived in York and East Yorkshire. Matthew had clearly travelled to Holland as he signed the will. But we can find no reference to a Matthew Jackson of a suitable age, living in the London at the time. We have also looked in East Yorkshire, and can find no reference to the children arriving there either. Any pointers?

I would think the best place to look is the 1841 Census, or the National Archives.
