Research is going on into the history of Cradley Heath Male Voice Choir for this year"™s centenary celebrations. One of its members, Edward Bayliss, was killed in action in April 1918 in France. The home address given at the time of death was 40 Newtown Street, Cradley Heath, but no age appears in official records. However, from the 1911 Census we know that there were two Edwards, father (a miner) and son (house painter). Although it seems more likely that it was Edward junior who died at the Battle of Hazebrouck, it is not out of the question that it was the elder Edward as the age of conscription had earlier risen to 51.

If it was Edward senior who was killed in action he would have been 53 years old, and if it was his son then he would have been 27 years old. It would be very much appreciated if anyone has access to local records and could help might clarify the matter.

Information has it is that "˜Edward"™ was Cradley born, lived in Cradley Heath, had enlisted at Old Hill and had initially been with the South Staffordshire Regiment, R/N 24135. He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal which means he could have been in France from 1916.
