Dodman's Emmigrating to Canada/ Completed
My name is Jeff Dodman, from Snettisham, Norfolk, County, Eng. my ancestors, David Dodman b. 1818 - d.? , Snettisham, William Dodman b. 1821, Snettisham, died On Canada, John Dodman b. 1825, Snettisham, d, On Canada, Elizabeth Dodman b. 1831, Snettisham, died On Canada. Along with their mother Mary ( Dodman ) Hipkins, b.1782 Norfolk County Eng. whom married John Hipkins b. 1783 ( est. ) Norfolk County Eng. all emmigrated to Canada at the same time. Here in On Canada we have no way of finding records of this event happening, all have been lost here in Canada, for this time frame. We have no dates of when they left Norfolk nor from what port-of-call they left from nor what port-of-call they entered into Canada. What we do have is that in the early 1850's they arrived in Oxford County On Canada. Is it possible to get any information of this event that did happen at some point in the late 1840's. Calculating how long it would take crossing the Atlantic during this time period, we may even have to go back to the mid 1840's. Since that, they were from Norfolk County, they may have departed from Docking Norfolk County. This is only a guess though. Any help with this event happening would be deeply appriciated.
Thank You Very Much

Hi Scratch and Patch
this would be better over in the general section as it isnt just for a census. I will move it over for you and hope you get some help.
It also looks like you have made 2 post the same so I will delete one.

Re: Dodman's Emmigrating to Canada
Hi
I will probably repeat some stuff that you already have...
This is perhaps William in the 1851 census in Canada?
Wm Dodman Farmer Norfolk Co Eng 33
Mary ditto wife Cranboro Canada West 28
WmH ditto Blenheim CW 11
Mary A ditto ditto 9
Elizth ditto ditto 5
Thos ditto ditto 3
John ditto ditto 1
If the children were all born in Canada and their mother a Canadian then it looks as though William arrive before 1840.
Then you say that Mary Dodman married John Hipkins
Is this them in 1851 in Canada?
John Hipkins labourer Norfolk Eng 55
Mary diito ditto 45
Richd ditto 13 Blenheim CW
Again that indicates they arived in Canada before 1838.
Mary (Dodman)Hipkins is born 1807 according to the 1851 census, 1796 in the 1861 and 1798 according to the 1871 census. But you say 1782? That would make her rather old to be Richard's mother?
The new familysearch site has the baptisms of some of the children. https://www.familysearch.org/ William's in 1821 ha sthe parents as Nicholas Dodman, and Mary Pilgrim but the others just say Nicholas Dodman and Mary.
So it looks as though they emigrated between 17th October 1830 (Elizabeth's baptism) and Richard Hipkins' birth in about 1838. Are you able to find that registered in Canada?

Re: Dodman's Emmigrating to Canada
PS If you look on Google maps then Docking is inland so they would not have departed from there
Hunstanton would be the nearest port and it is possible they would have journeyed over to France or somewhere and then on across the Atlantic. Or they could easily have gone to Liverpool or Southampton on the west coast of England and taken a boat from there.
And I suppose they could have travelled to New York and then on up to canada rather than direct. Unless you get lucky and find their names on a passenger list than it will be very hard to pin them down.
I hope that someone with access to lots of lists can help you.

Re: Dodman's Emigrating to Canada
Eh Jo: yes I Believe this is my William Dodman, according to my records they match your information listed. But I have William married to a Mary Obrine, not Mary Degan. The children are all canadian born & in 1851 they were in Oxford County,
Blenheim District, On Canada, which was Canada West. In 1851 John & Mary Hipkins were also here & this is where John died 30th, Oct., 1857. Their son canadian born Richard Hipkins in 1838 lived here as well. But moved to Thamesville, Kent County, On Canada. Where he married a Jane Ambrose. Richard died the 25th, May, 1911 & is burried in Mayhew Cemetery, Thamesville, Kent County, On., Canada. I have completely lost Mary Hipkins trail not knowing where & when she died. But the last place I can but her is in Thamesville, Kent County, On, for Richard's & Jane's marriage, 1st, Jan., 1884.
Jo I have also lost David 's trail in Oxford County, Blenheim District, from a 1851 census. I know he was here & married. I do not know his spouses name but from a 1852 census, they were married here.
John Dodman B.1825 mariied a Mary Jane McKay, John died in 1907 & Mary Jane died in 1900, They are both burried in Mayhew Cemetery, Thamesville, Kent County, On., Canada.
Elizabeth Dodman b. 1830, Norfolk County, died in 1848, she was married to a William Broderick. They are both burried in Oxford County, Blenheim District, On., Canada. As for travelling to these area's this information is all confirmed.
Jo if I may ask, I have found a sibbling to this family I did not know existed. Her name was Avis Dodman b.1828, I have no information on her except this. Is there anything you can find about her. Also I have found a Thomas Nicholas Dodman
b. 1832, Snettisham, Norfolk County, Eng. his wife's 1st name was Isabella, in 1881 he was a shepherd in Little Fransham on Lings End Farm. Is Thomas a son to Nicholas Dodman & Mary Pilgrim? Nicholas is the 1st husband of Mary Pilgrim & the father to all the children mentioned except, Richard Hipkins of course.
Thank You Very Much Jo , for all your " GREAT HELP. "
