Apologies to all. I'm new to computers and genealogy and, frankly, I like genealogy better. I still write with a fountain pen and like to fill it with a bottle of ink. And, I'm left-handed and, according to my grandfather, Clarence BATE, was the first in generations to be so. And, no, I'm not hundreds of years old.
Thanks to all those who have put information on the board esp. peterd, linell and jimmy, about both BATE and COLEY families.
BATE: Clarence was a Teacher, and his father was a Blacksmith. He, Clarry, won a scholarship to grammar school [Halesowen?] and later went on to teach at Rugby Low School. I recognise a number of names and know that this is the right family thread. There is a family legend that BATE men in Cradley worked on the shipping chain for the 'Titanic' a hundred years ago. I know that this is unlikely to be recorded in any way anywhere, but could the anchor chains have been made in Cradley?
As to the CONFUSION, I was sitting writing all the stuff down as best I could [on paper with ink!] and only went to the loo. When I came back, it had all gone.
Not the paper [still surrounded by that], the website. The board doesn't look the same, and I can't find the place with all the answers. Can anyone help?
Yours Cag-handed.
PS. I'm writing this here because I can't find anywhere else to write anything, either. Did try to send messages to each person individually [particularly the one who said there was a photograph of my grandmother aged 7 which I'd love to see] but they kept popping off before I'd finished them.

Thanks. All of this helps a great deal, but please, please, don't archive it yet until I've worked out how to access the archives. Like I said, very new to internet forums and, despite very long telephone tutorial with my lovely son, Rick [who is doing exams and hadn't really got the time!], I'm still a novice. It took all weekend to write down every scrap of information I have been given [very gratefully received] and am now on A2-sized paper, because I can't save, find or record properly!
The farthest back BATE family members I have therefore are:
Samuel BATE [b.1780] married Ann [b. about 1780]
Their son, Joseph BATE [b. about 1809 in Cradley, Worcestershire] married Harriet HACKETT [b. about 1813 in Halesowen]
[Their son, George b. 1834 ... etc]
Is there any further information on the earliest of these, Samuel and Ann BATE?

Re: Clarence Bate and family
No records found for getting further back than Samuel Smoky, did you see these notes here, recorded by the Cradley Vicar in 1857 and 1863, gives some more information:-

Blomers Row
Bate Joseph Nailer, no church
Harriet Church
7 Children
Henry 21 Dec, nails, church seldom
Joseph 19 April chains, no church

Above basically said the family attended Church seldom, although the children attended Sunday School, yes in the evenings, they learnt to read and write there. New Connection was the Methodist New Connexion Chapel in Cradley. The family were all in the Nail or Chain making trade, a cottage industry usually in their back yards.
1863 Vicars notes

Smoky you really need to put your info on some kind of a tree.
You can use a Family tree maker
or as I do you can use a hosting company such as Ancestry - Genes reunited and Tribal pages.
lots of others are also available.
You also need to check all the info yourself as mistakes do happen.
You could see if there is a marraige for a Samuel Bate and Ann then see what it says for witnesses
You could look at the bapts for the kids too.
This section moves quite quickly.
I will leave this here while we run with it and if I archive it will show you the link so you can find it.
If you need to explore another ancestor you need to put a new post on or it becomes confusing.
So can anyone find a marriage pls for Samuel and ann

Dear Northern Lass
Thanks for your patience with a beginner. I think I've managed to save a link to the BATE file, so don't need it to remain on the board any longer. Just in case, can you tell me where to find it in the archives [and also COLEY]?

Re: Clarence Bate and family
Dear Jan
I am checking what I can as go, but am severely slowed up by lack of computer expertise, and side-tracked by all the wonderful information on the site. However, think I have cracked saving a link [and not all the information in documents] and have found a way to look at the Archive. Not sure. I may get back to you on that.
As to adding to the Family Tree, I can't confirm Joyce COLEY's date of death. Will look into it. And, I don't know what constitutes reliable information but can give you a few bits:
Clarence BATE m. Dora COLEY [1916-You told me that!] Both now deceased dates approx. 1971 and 1986 at 100 Elmdon Lane Marston Green, East Birmingham. Will look into this, too.
They had four children: in age order descending: Alan, Brian, Ian and Anne. All now deceased for definite. Alan and Brian were born in Rugby, but not sure of the other two. Ian b. approx 1931 died aged 4 of something terrible like tb or scarlet fever. Anne also died 1986, only a few months after her mother, Dora. Will check all of this for dates, etc.
The following two were my parents, and these dates and places are accurate.
Marguerite Vivien MARLOW m. Brian Ensor BATE in March 1952. Two children only:
Sally Rosemary BATE[me] and Michael James BATE. Both still alive.
Both my parents died in Knaresborough, North Yorks: mum d.26/1/87 and dad d.31/12/94.
Is that of any use to you? Thanks for bearing with me. I'm having a wonderful time doing this, and am planning a little foray to the places of my ancestors soon.
Sally
Ps. I have no idea whether I have Private Messaged or Posted on the Forum, but have just read something else in the BATE file about 'am I going to Dudley, and can I look up some people?' Yes, I am, end of Feb hopefully, and for about a week: and particularly want to see where Noah HINGLEY, Netherton, Dudley-Chainmakers, is or was. Will gladly look things up once I've sussed where to go, who to see, etc. The people you list must be related BATEs, and I'm not even sure that I've tracked down all of Clarry's many siblings yet.
