Clarence Bate and family

Post by Northern Lass »

smoky wrote:I'm looking for ancestors BATE and COLEY, from chain-making families in the Black Country [Stourbridge, Dudley, Cradley Heath]. Despite there being hundreds of them, or perhaps because of it, have hit a brick wall. The only thing I'm sure of is that Clarence BATE [my grandfather] married Dora Millicent COLEY [my grandmother] during or just after WW1. Their children were named Alan, Brian [my father] and Anne. Clarence was one of 12 or 15 children. Dora had a brother Tom and a sister Verena, and possibly others. Sadly, all are now deceased.
Is anyone looking for the same family? Or tips on how to start from so little information?
Sally

What a shame that is a regis office one as you can't look those up at archives
they have to be ordered from the GRO or the regis office local to the area

do we have a dob for Clarence?
do you have his dob and any other info we can add him to our Bcc tree then

Hi
They must have both been around for the 1901 census so you could start there.
Clarence should not be a problem as it is such an unusual name and you know that he came from a chainmaking family.
Perhaps you know when he died? And how old he was?
People on here will be happy to post the census information I am sure - unless you want to find it yourself? If that is the case then you will need to pay to view the census images (or get to a library or history centre where you can do it for free).
You would need the marriage certificate to be really certain but I think you could move on without it if you prefer.

BATE: Clarence was a Teacher, and his father was a Blacksmith. He, Clarry, won a scholarship to grammar school [Halesowen?] and later went on to teach at Rugby Low School. I recognise a number of names and know that this is the right family thread. There is a family legend that BATE men in Cradley worked on the shipping chain for the 'Titanic' a hundred years ago. I know that this is unlikely to be recorded in any way anywhere, but could the anchor chains have been made in Cradley?

The Firm who made the Anchor for the Titanic was 'Noah Hingley' of Netherton Dudley, a lot of local men worked there.
