I didn't know that one

Sure you did! After William beat her up, Ellen went back to her mother's. Then she died there.

The death cert is a bit hard to read because the gen rec office inserted a copy of their cert into a modern certificate and it is sort of dark. Still, it says:

Died: July 16th 1901 at 40 Dudley Road Rowley Regis
Name: Ellen Downs
Age: 25
Occupation: formerly a French Polisher
Cause of death: Acute inflammation of the lung
certified account from H A pearson coroner for Staffordshire, inquest held July 19th 1901
Registered: 20th July 1901

Thanks for the extra 1911 info BCW. That doesn't look very likley does it? Unless he was mad with the drink?

Oh yes I remember now

I know he died in the Sedgley workhouse in 1919
and no mention there of him being mad

I would love to find
- where they are in 1881
-where she is in 1901
-her death
-where he is in 1911

and I still think he isnt a rose :P
