*TBC Archive in 24 hrs*My elusive family on census night

Post by Vikinghunter »

Hi Everybody,

This is my first post here so please be gentle with me! (apologies if this is the wrong "room").

My great-grandfather (Christian Moller) and his brother (Axel Moller) both emigrated to the UK from Denmark sometime in the mid 1880s. They settled down, got married and raised families in the UK and eventually died and got buried in the UK too. I have copies of their UK marriage and death certificates but not their (Danish) birth certificates yet.

I have searched through the UK 1891 census and have found Axel listed with his wife and kids PLUS one of Christian's daughters all together at an address in London.

I'm totally mystified as to why I cannot find any trace of Christian and his wife plus kids (minus one daughter) anywhere on this census.....

Where could they possibly have been on the census night in question? I believe it is illegal not to complete these forms for the enumerator on the night in question?

Any ideas folks?

Thanks in advance.

David

Thanks but, I've already seen that one and it's not them.

Christian would have been approx 37 then with:
Helen (39) wife
Mark (9) son
Clara 11 daughter
Edith 5 daughter
Nanna 13 daughter (this is the one listed at bro Axel's place on the night)

the plot thickens.........

unless he was a bigamist.....?

This looks like Christian and Axel in 1881, David?
1881 48 Compton Building, Clerkenwell, London
Christian Moller Head 26 Clock Maker b. Denmark
Helen Moller Wife 29 b. Dorsetshire
Nanna H. Moller Daur 3 b. Clerkenwell, Middlesex
Clara R. Moller Daur 1 b. St. Pancras
Axel H. Moller Brother 24 Traveller - Grocer b. Denmark

If this is them, they were already in England by 1881 and probably by 1878 as Nanna was born in Clerkenwell.

No wonder you couldn't find them in 1891!!! Here is how they are recorded:
1891 65 Warren St., St. Pancras
Christiana Miller Head 36 Clock Maker (Watch) b. Denmark, Copenhagen
Ellen Miller Wife 39 Somersetshire, Pinford
Mark Hans Miller Son 8 b. London, Clerkenwell
Clara L Miller Daur 11 b. London, Bloomsbury
Edith M Miller Daur 5 b. London, Kensington West

1901 294 Upper St., Islington
Christian Moller Head 44 Clock Maker (Watch) b. Denmark, British Subject
Helen Moller Wife 47 b. Somerset, Milborne Port
Nanna Moller Daur 23 b. London, Clerkenwell
Clara Moller Daur 21 Watch Maker's Assistant b. London, Holloway
Mark Moller Son 18 Watch Maker's Assistant b. London, Clerkenwell
Edith Moller Daur 15 Swivel Carder b. London, Newington
