Genealogists Ode
We are the storytellers
For our family,
We seek the people who have made
Us as we are to be.
We look for those of long ago
Whose names have been unknown,
For those who coped with tragedies
And struggled on alone.
For those whose lives were different
from that of ours today,
The hardships and joys are plentiful,
Littered along the way.
Our searching brings together
Those on a similar trail,
We talk, we support, we listen,
We find, we achieve or fail.
I thank my ancestors daily
For the life they've given me,
And the gift of community resurrected
Is here for all to see.
I will never find each person
who's shaped my future here,
From East Anglia, Yorkshire, Scotland,
London, and Lancashire.
But somehow it doesn't matter
That my past is incomplete,
The friends that I have discovered
Has been an unexpected treat.
So here's to us researchers,
For all the roles we play,
Thank you each and everyone,
And have a Merry Christmas day.
