Hi all. I am quite new to this and just worked out how to post(!!)
Found this forum searching for Joseph Smith on google and had help from SnoopySue via private message. (she knows her stuff!)
I have been searching free sites such as http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ and 1881 census info is free, 1901 census is a useful site as you can see positions on a map for free.
Aim is to gather as much free info as I can then pay for anything not available.
Any recommendations to best package would be appreciated.
Only been at if for a few weeks but it is decidedly addictive, whatever you find, you want to know more!
I am searching SMITH line (West Brom to Garston, originating Derbyshire (Thanks Sue)), RIDGWAY (no 'e') line from Cannock.
Smith line maternally includes GROVES (Grove), Ridgway Maternal DAWSON and GREATRIX (Longdon)
I, like another Newby Emma, started with a partial family tree created by my Dad in the 80's along with Grandfather Fred Smith's birth certificate and some war records.
I inherited my Aunts photographs and wanted to find names to go to faces..... and so it developed.
It may be of interest that the British Library have now put old newspapers on line, Pay to view but free to search, it's bound to come in useful somewhere for someone!
TTFN. Pam

Hi birdbrain
I hope you enjoy the forum and our company.
You will be better off asking questions in the beginners section.
If you are stuck and want people to help you find your family ask in the general section.
