Helena 'whats 'er name'?

I need some help in deciphering a name taken from Warwickshire Parish records.
Christening in 1579 of Anna Antrobus,, daughter of John Antrobus ( who , I believe was vicar of Bishops Tachbrook from 1575 to 1616) ..and mother Helena ????? can't make out the surname :?

Now, I know you guys are really good at reading this old writing .... can anyone make it out?... I have been going nearly cross eyed with this one :roll:

Looks like it is written in Latin to me Ex Pat, not got a clue, will have another look later on today when the sun shines and I have some natural light, too dark here at the moment to make anything out. Linell.

There appears to be a Latin word axorib but I haven't had any luck translating it.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.

In Latin but I would have to see more of the writing to compare it against.

It is not a name. It is "Helena his wife".

If you look at the rest of the document you will see it repeated on other baptisms.

One clerk writes "his wife" quite clearly. The other scribbles that thing.

If you look at the way the clerk wrote Antrobus, you will see that any S preceeded by a vowel looks like the second letter of your example.

A couple of baptisms before you will see a Margaret with exactly the same scribble after her name.

Or is could be a uxorius...latin for wife.

I think you are right ..... there are a couple of baptisms where the mother has that scribble after her name.... so it is 'Helena.. his wife'

I have just discovered something else here ... the Christening date is listed as 20 Feb 1579 ... but the dates listed before it in the list are December .... so I was thinking that this should be Feb 1580 not 1579, assuming that records are in chronological order. Looking at the other years I noticed that the same thing was happening ... ie . at the end of each year they show Christenings with Jan or Feb as the month.

After some investigation ...it seems that up until the 1500s the 'Julian' calendar was in use ... this had the New year start as March 25th... but as this fell during Holy week the New Year festival was on April 1st. When it changed over to the Gregorian calendar ( ie. New year moved to Jan 1st) there would have been people who tried to celebrate on April 1st as of old.... they were called April Fools ( hence the origin of April Fools day!)
You learn something every day don't you :grin:

I will now have to review some of the records I have got for the 1500s to check I have the years right!

This new date for Anna's Christening also makes alot more sense...as I had the burial record for his first wife as May 1578 ! :shock:

I can't find this second marriage though :?
I will get organised and write out what I have ... and see if anyone can help me find the marriage

So this is what I have so far..... and I may be at a 'dead end' :?
A note here about those Warwickshire Parish records ..... for some reason 'Ancestry' have records for Bishops Tachbrook records under 'Bedford', which is not, as far as I know a Parish in Warwickshire!

John Antrobus married Elizabeth ??? 16th Jan 1578 in Bishops Tachbrook, Warwickshire
Quite a few trees on Ancestry have this Elizabeth as Elyz Helen Price .... but I can't see that in the name on the record .. it is really difficult to decipher :?

I was reading part of someone's thesis on the clergy in 1500s Warwickshire and came upon a note that John Antrobus's wife had died after only 4 months of marriage ... this I confirmed from the records .. here is her burial record in Bishops Tachbrook May 1578

Then we have that Christening for Anna in 1580 and Elizabeth Antrobus in 1581 (my 9th Great Grandmother)...followed by another 3 children ... all with mother listed as Helena or Ellen... all Christened in Bishops Tachbrook

John Antrobus died in 1623 .. buried in Bishops Tachbrook... and is recorded as being 'late vicar' of Tachbrook
Then in 1633 there is a burial record for Ellen Antrobus widow

I would dearly love to get Helena's or Ellen's ( John's second wife) surname ...as she would be my ancestor... not that first wife Elizabeth......
but I can't find that second marriage in Bishops Tachbrook records ... I wonder if he married in another Parish?

I am still learning my geography of the area so not sure which Parishes are most likely candidates.

There also seem to be a few hiccups with these records on Ancestry, but what a marvellous set of records they are and isn't it wonderful to get back so far! :P

Probably Barford not Bedford, mind you these towns were in Diocese's which held Parish's from all over England, sometimes they were miles apart. HTH Linell.
