*Archive?* 1841 census -Ruth Berrington help please
I have found Ruth Barrington / Berrington (nee Clarke) 1783-1880 on all the census bar 1841. she was born in Shropshire @ married William Barrington 26/03/1810. I think he died in 1839.
In 1851 she is with her son Thomas @ 58 Dudley Port
In 1861 @ 72 Wood Street with son William
In 1871 @ 38 Union Street with Grand daughter Cordelia Hawthorne nee Fielding.
I have never found her on the 1841 census. The nearest I have found is Ruth Benton age 50 at Kinswinford. She is with a Matilda age 15 and Ruth did have a daughter Matilda about this age & unmarried still in 1841. There is also a Benjamin Benton....
Any ideas welcome!

Re: Ruth Berrington census help please
I have tried all combinations in all counties and can't find her. There is a baptism for Matilda to William and Ruth Berrington in Kingswinford in 1826 and Jeremiah in 1819 - but I suppose you know about these. I can't find any others that fit the bill - sorry.

Re: Ruth Berrington census help please
Just had a thought lurchergirly - if Ruth happened to be in West Bromwich district during the 1841 census, which isn't that far from Dudley Port, there is a chance that she wasn't transcribed on to the index. A lot of West Bromwich census was completed in pencil and has faded and some of the census books which were held in West Bromwich Town Hall were affected by water and spoiled. This might be the reason she's not showing up.

Re: Ruth Berrington census help please
Thanks for having a look at this.
I had seen the Benjamin Berrington (later sentenced to death for stealing mail caught when he used a large amount of cash to buy a colliers suit) & wondered if he was our black sheep. She could have been living at West Brom. I did'nt know about the water thing.

I think this should either go to Archive or Brick Walls. Any views?

Hello again Lurchergirly
It might be worth your while contacting Sandwell Archives and asking them to look through their 1841 index books. They have the 1841 for West Bromwich and Tipton on film there and have done their own indexing. You never know, you might get lucky. You can contact them here : http://www.sandwell.gov.uk/info/200111/ ... research/3
