ARC TBC - Joseph & Charles Bromwich

Post by mumbles »

a S. Clark wrote to Bugle noting that on a visit to Bilston Cemetary a staff member noted that a soldier who fought at Rorke,s Drift in Zulu War was buried there in umarked grave in Section D. plot 53.
I have researched this and found :-
Joseph Bromwich, born St. Mary's Warwick, former trade or calling - Porter.
He originally enlisted in 28th Brigade, which had its headquarters at Warwick, the Line Regiment associated with that brigade was the 6th (1st Royal Warwickshire) Regiment on 27th August, 1877. His original Brigade Number was 28th Brigade/1028. On attestment he was described as 18 years of age. (I do have further details if you're interested please PM me.)

On the following day he then transferred to 25th Brigade, which had it headquarters at Brecon, the Line Regiment associated with that brigade was the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment. Initially he was assigned to the 1st Battalion of the 24th, which was then already serving in South Africa. When the 2nd Battalion of the 24th were also called to go to South Africa, he transferred Battalions on 31st January, 1878, and made his way more than like onboard H.M.T. Himalaya to South Africa and for service in the 9th Cape Frontier War against the amaXhosa people.

He was then present at the Defence of the Mission Station at Rorke's Drift, 22nd - 23rd January, 1879, serving with 'B' Company. On 29th January, 1879 he transferred to 'A' Company 2nd/24th.

He was discharged from the Army in 1882 suffering from Hepatitis.

He married a Betsey Fellows Davies born Bilston and died in 1916 aged 60.and was buried at Bilston probably because that was where his wife was from. They lived in Aston Warks.from 1891 to his death

His Older brother Charles Bromwich also was at Rorke,s Drift and is noted as a Pensioner living in Warwick in 1881 aged only 41
