I'm trying to find out what happened to my great grandmother, Mary Ann Schofield b. in Northcamp in Aldershot in 1875. After being orphaned in 1882, she was sent to an orphanage in York. In 1901, she is in Box called Mary Annie Schofield working as a monthly nurse (nurse for mothers in run up to and after giving birth). In 1904, she had my grandmother in Bath - for whom she made private adoption arrangements in about 1906. My grandmother was told that her mother had returned to nursing. I found out by chance that Mary then had another illegitimate child in 1910 in Bath - once more a private adoption was organised. This family had some letters which said that once more, Mary returned to nursing after the adoption and a couple of letters which show that she back to monthly nursing in Oxfordshire in late 1913. In the 1911 census, she is working as a private nurse near Rochester but in refering to herself as Mary Annora (annora was her mother's name) Schofield. My last positive id of her is in 1915, when she has yet another illegitimate child in Bath, which again leads to a private adoption. I can't find a positive match in the death registers. In all the birth certificates she calls herself Mary Annora Schofield and says that she is a professional nurse. The 2nd family child's thought that Mary may have ended up as a Matron in Windsor but my research has more or less discounted this - the nurse in question became a matron in the early 1930s and worked there until the early 1950s - I can't believe that a hospital would employ a matron into her 70s.
So after 1915 I have no positive id. My husband during a NA visit had a quick look in the Nursing Registers and found a Mary Ann Schofield in the mid 1920s. Unfortunately I think that this nurse probably is the one who became the matron in windsor.
On a more promising note, given her employment as a monthly nurse, the midwife roll for 1920 shows a Mary A Schofield who qualified in 1913, living in Greenfield, Oldham. I would ideally like to go through the roll of midwives from 1913 to see if it is a likely match as the roll shows place of residence - if this midwife ends up in Norwich in the late 1920s, she was probably the one who became a matron (that nurse moved from Norwich hospital to Windsor), but if it shows the midwife living in the South West in 1913 - 1915, it is probably the right one. Unfortunately the Royal College of Midwives archives are currently closed and apart from finding the 1920 roll on familyrelatives.com, I haven't been able to locate copies for any other years.
Does anyone have any early midwife rolls or can anyone suggest where I should go now?
