Hi Geoff
Welcome to the forum!

That all looks very neat and tidy. What is the brickwall? Going back more than Noah's parents?

It is this baptism is it?

Noah Davis 23 Mar 1813, parents Willm and Mary, at St Thomas Dudley (extracted record IGI)

Are there two families with William +Mary as the parents?

Mark mentioned in a prev post on another thread re Pains being used as a surname if they
couldn't read the name
wonder if that has happened here?

Thank`s the main question is
Are Davis - Pains two families or one
If one the reason for both names.
Is James born to Eliza the same as Noah`s son as of marriage certificate.
There appear to be many William Mary Davis marriages at that time.
Geoff
trying to establish positive conclusion.

Here is a hint...use the search facility in the top right corner

viewtopic.php?f=31&t=6219&p=74656&hilit=pain#p74656

30 Jul 1877. Christ Church, West Bromwich. Joseph Hadley 21 B Puddler West Bromwich Father John Hadley Puddler and Rachel Pain 20 S West Bromwich Father Abel Pain Puddler. Wit: John Saxon & Mary Ann Randell

Remember we were wondering why Rachel used the name Pain?

Smethwick Archives said this was a habit from Christ Church Oldbury.

The Vicar handed the paperwork over a 3rd party to fill in the details for registration.

If they could not read the marraige register they subsitituted "Pain" for the surname.

They were going to get the Bishop of Lichfield to provide the church register so they could correct all the "Pain" marriages.

To be honest I'm not sure that is what has happened here. The 1851 census could be a simple transcription error where Davis has been read and then re-written as Pains ie the D has been read as P, and vi as in - that is all it takes. But that would not explain the birth of Thomas Payne in 1836, or the marriage in 1835 for Woodall and Paine. It does look as though Noah used both names and then settled on Davis.
