ARC - Family Bate from Manchester

Post by Jeffrich55 »

Hello folks,

I've been stuck on finding my G-G-G-Grandmothers family for ages.
In the 1841 census, Sarah Adams was noted as from Rowley Regis, but subsequent cenus to the last record in 1861, she was down as being born in Manchester.

Sarah Adams was probably Sarah Bate before her marriage to Thomas Adams Indeed there were Bate's living close in 1841. A Samuel Bate was noted as being from Salford. He possibly could have been her brother.

Recently I found a Sarah Bate b1786 in Manchester.
Baptisms: 15 Apr 1786 St Stephen's, Astley, Lancashire, England
Sarah Bate - Daughter of Ralph Bate & Sarah
Abode: Tyldesley
Register: Baptisms 1760 - 1812, Page 37, Entry 14

Tyldsley is close to Salford and suppose is like a present day suburb of Manchester.

Ralph and Sarah Bate her parents I think were married in 1777.

Marriage: 20 Jul 1777 St Mary the Virgin, Leigh, Lancashire, England
Ralph Bate - of Leigh Parish
Sarah Urmson - (X), Spinster of Leigh Parish
Witness: Isaac Turner; Samuel Brabin
Married by Banns by: John Barlow Vicar
Register: Marriages 1777 - 1786, Page 1, Entry 4

Leigh is not far from Tylesley.

Are there any other Children?

Some problems!
On further investigation I looked for another Sarah Bate getting married in area, as my Sarah must have been in our area around 1811 to get married to Thomas in Oldswinford.
Why Oldswinford?

Marriage: 9 Feb 1807 St Mary the Virgin, Bury, Lancashire, England
James Booth - (X), Hatter Bachelor of this Parish
Sarah Bates - (X), spinster of this Parish
Witness: James Milnes; William Crompton
Married by Banns by: Henry Unsworth Off. Minr.
Register: Marriages 1802 - 1812, Page 267, Entry 884

Bury not being too close though! Surely not same church!
How old is she and I wonder and who is father, Ralph?

More likely.

Marriage: 22 Apr 1816 St Mary the Virgin, Leigh, Lancashire, England
John Hays - Weaver of Leigh Parish
Sarah Bate - (X), Spinster of Leigh Parish
Witness: James Lees; Timothy Taylor
Married by Banns by: Danl. Birkett Vicar
Notes: [Groom signed 'John Hayes']
Register: Marriages 1813 - 1820, Page 145, Entry 434
Source: LDS Film 559188

My Sarah would have been 30
How old is this Sarah, I wonder and who is father, Ralph?

There is a birth that could be the Sarah above.

Baptisms: 15 Jun 1793 St Mary the Virgin, Leigh, Lancashire, England
Sarah Bate - Daughter of John Bate & Ann
Abode: Bedford
Register: Baptisms 1782 - 1797, Page 138
Source: LDS Film 1885648

I'm aware there are a few Forum members who also have Sarah Bate as an ancestor. There are still a few trees that have Sarah Bate as being born in Halesowen with father John Bate as I previously had also. Maybe we can throw a little more light on this.
Why would Sarah claim to be from Staffordshire, then subsequent census's from Manchester?

Here's hoping a few of you more experienced detectives with access to appropriate records can help.

In anticipation,
Jeff
