Drove past it on my way back from holidays, didn't recognise it down there anymore, does anyone know what used to stand on the new giant TESCO store :?: Linell.

Last time I was there, there were loads of road works with confussing signs - made it difficult to find out where we had to go as it must be more than ten years ago I was there the time before!

I thought it may have been a forest/wood at one time that had been set alight.

Interesting thought Annie, will have to find out, probably BC Wench will know, she has a vast local knowledge.

Cheers from Linell.

I've been trying to find out for years - been through loads of stuff at Smethwick Archives. Nobody seems to know where it got it's name.

From The History of Tipton :

"Little is known of Tipton's earliest history, the area was once part of the Royal Forest of Cannock, and records survive of land ownership in Norman times. By the 12th century there was a church (St. John's) and a moated manor house. During the Civil War Edward Dudley raised troops for his Parliamentary attack on Royalist held Dudley Castle. Dudley's sortie was unsuccessful, and his troops were defeated in a pitched battle at Tipton Green".

Burnt Tree isn't far from Tipton Green, or Dudley Castle, so perhaps there was a forest fire during the Civil War

Perhaps our Dennis or Barb might know the answer :-)

Sorry, but I don"™t know where the name originated from. I will find out when I"™m next at Dudley Archives, unless our Den knows or even Rob?

The pen factory RF is referring to was Joseph Gillott on the Birmingham Road on the same side as Dudley County Ground. Gillotts was knocked down along with some old houses when the Tesco store, which was in Dudley town where Cousins furniture store is now, was re-built on the site where the new store is at Burnt Tree.

Dudley County Ground was demolished, making way for the Castlegate Park, not a park as we would think, but a leisure complex housing a Village Hotel, cinema, tenpin bowling places to eat and of course, housing!!

Must admit though, the road is so much better not having the actual island.
