Newbie says hello .....

Post by JoyBells »

Hi, just started looking at family trees, I think it's an age thing in that I now have the time and on receiving my bus pass mortality raises it's head.

I have a beginners question about which software to use and how to protect the information searched in my tree by backing it up onto hard drives rather than trusting and maintaining an account on the search programs such as Ancestry, Genes Reunited etc. Where should I post this question on the forum?

Be nice to work with you all, Graeme

Hello Graham - Welcome to the Forum

I have used Rootsmagic for years. It's really good for organising and saving all your hard work. You can automatically back it up to the same programme or to a Gedcom to transport it to another programme. The thing I like about this is that you can copy it, onto an uneditable disc to give to relatives, or an editable version on disc to take with you to archives etc. Not sure of the price, I think it is about £40.00, and you have the option of updating it every couple of years. They also run an on-line tutorial - you can see it here through S & N Genealogy : http://www.rootsmagic.co.uk/

Good luck - Maggie

Hi Graeme.

Welcome to the forum.

As Northern Lass has said, there's lots of info elsewhere in the forum but I'd be inclined to try out some of the free stuff first (MyHeritage, Legacy etc.) as well as the online sites to get the hang of the apps. They all have their drawbacks and lack of functionality (that you can add by paying for the full version) but I'm pretty sure that they will all allow you to create a gedcom (the internet standard for genealogical files) that you can transfer to any other app if you decide to go fully paid up.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.

I hear you Jo, Spent the last ten days on this hour after hour, not been this bad since Command and Conquer RED ALERT came out.

The bit that put the wind up me a bit was how easy it was to lose half your tree with one mistake. I must admit being new I haven't done the copy all certificates in an A4 binder yet, simply hoping to keep it all on the PC.

We will get there, many thanks for the buzz speak to you again maybe.
