I have a bit of a problem with what looks like
a rainbow sort of smudge
from what I have read I need to degauz?
any advice pls

My old pc screen had a degauss button on it.

I assume it is an old CRT type nad not and LCD/LED? Do you have speakers near your screen? The most common cause I have found over the years is unshielded speakers close to the monitor.

no no speakers near it it is a laptop going to computer hospital it is a laptop too and yes an old one thanks all anyway

If it is a Portable then it is not a CRT screen and therefore not prone to magnetic fields and no degaussing is possible.

It has gone to be repaired.
I am on the other one where the screen hinges have gone
and it is being held up with 3 tins of baked beans
