Query on Glasses what were they for?

...... can someone comment on this.

I have two glass tumblers engraved with a spiders web with two flies caught in it and a spider on it, surrounded by a circle of leaves.
One glass has Dan Stewart Partridge on it and the other Mary Ann Allen, both dated 1889.
Could these be engagement glasses and does anyone understand the symbolism of them?
