Introduction from Sue Cluett

Post by suecluett »

Hi

I've just joined the forum. My maiden surname is "cluett" and I have made a specific study of this name and its various variants. I'm always interested in any examples of this that are found and so far I have compiled a database of instances of this surname from BMD, vital records, censuses, official records etc. and from individual tree information that others have sent me. You can search this index on my web site at www(dot)cluett(dot)co(dot)uk and if you find an instance of this surname or a variant that isn't already in the database I'd be very pleased to hear from you!

At the moment I've been doing a course in writing up one's family history at the society of Genealogists and as part of this I'm writing a short account of Noah Clueit a young man that was killed in WW1 after only 6 days at the front! We found his name on the Menin Gate memorial when we did a battlefields tour a few years ago.

I have a lot of information from the War Graves Commission and the Medal Roll etc. need a little more information about him to finish this project for my course and I wonder if any kind person could check for me if they are at the Wolverhamton Record Office any time soon if there was an obituary notice in the Wolverhampton Newspapers, either the Express and Star or the Wolverhampton Chronicle. I have found from my own library volunteer work indexing local newspapers that there is often an obituary in the local papers when soldiers died, sometimes with a photo. He died on 25 May 1915 on the Ypres Salient. A lot of young men were killed about the same time so it might have been part of a batch of obituaries reported a week or two later. Of course, in return for this lookup I'd be very please to perform a reciprocal lookup at the SOG or similar as we live fairly close to London and are often up there.

I'm not sure if I should post a copy part of this introduction to the lookup site on genealogy forum's lookup board as it seems to be mainly for Vital records etc. Anyway, I wait to be advised.

Good luck with all your own research.

Oops, sorry - when I typed the web address I was so concerned to put (dot) in rather than "." to avoid spam that I got it wrong. It should have read www(dot)cluett(dot)org(dot)uk but any gooogle search brings it up!
