A new Black Country Connection

Post by nosh3r »

Hi all
I have found my gggrandfather and mother + of course their 4 children came from this area.
Nicholas Powell b abt 1826 in Ireland.Died in Castleford 1885.
Married to Elizabeth Sheldon 1819-1884.A local girl.Born in Dudley Baptsed in Burslem.
It is beleived her parents had The Seven Stars Public House.

Children
Frank 1848-1901
Fancis 1849-
John 1851-
Ann 1859-
All the children were registered in oldbury.
The family later moved North to WestYorks which of course is where i come in.

Nicholas arrived in the uk about 1835 with his father James Powell from Ireland his father was a soldier, i estimate his birth to be about 1800, now sadly thats all i have on James , this guy has been driving me mad for 2 years, just cant trace him.
Anyones help would be most welcome.
Regards
Michael

I have been looking for your James and have a few questions....

What relationship has the Vaughan family to the Powell family?

In 1851, Frank is staying with them.

1851 census transcription details for: Cabbage Hall, Dudley
National Archive Reference:
RG number: HO107 Piece: 2032 Folio: 415 Page: 29

Reg. District: Dudley Sub District: Dudley
Parish: Dudley Enum. District: 1O
Ecclesiastical District: City/Municipal Borough: Dudley
Address: Cabbage Hall, Dudley
County: Staffordshire
Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation ,Disability Where Born
VAUGHAN, Richard Head Married M 35 1816 Duddlesbury Shropshire
VAUGHAN, Anne Wife F 42 1809 Witton Radnorshire
VAUGHAN, Emma Daughter F 11 1840 Duddlesbury Shropshire
VAUGHAN, Richard Son M 3 1848 Dudley Worcestershire
POWELL, Frank Uriah Visitor F 1 (18 MOS) 1850 Dudley Worcestershire
LEWIS, Edward Servant M 22 1829 Farm Servant Dont Know

I also think Frank and Francis are the same person.....

Yes, I put that 1841 census on the thread in Military.

Had a good look for James in the military records but there is nothing that matches at Chelsea or the Militia.

There are a few officers in the army listings but without further information it is impossible to match him up.

James could also be with the East India Company and FIBIS would be a good place to look.

Had a good look for a Nicholas Powell (and variants of) being born in Ireland via that VERY EXPENSIVE site, Irish Family History Foundation, and found zero which is a worry.
