Hi all,
I'm looking for advise on how to organize a file full of acts of birth, acts of marriage, printed copies of FreeBMD extracts, i.e. the proof and justification of my family tree.
I've been trying to organize it from myself backwards having a section for each generation, but it gets complicated with the siblings and their families.
Is there a standard way of doing this?
Would appreciate any advise
Geoff

Re: paper copy organisation
I use Gramps to record all my family details but I like to keep a paper proof and the problem I have is classifying all these documents, the non-direct members of the different generations pose the main problem as I end up with several parallel levels of classification, and it becomes very quickly a murky mess, especially when you have several generations with the same first name.
Maybe I should use the Ahnentafel number for each member as a classification, but does this system take into account siblings?

never heard of gramp but couldnt you give each one a file no and enter that file on gramps then you can locate the paper file from your digital record ?

Several of my acquaintances that have literally tens of thousands in their data bases find alphabetical filing drawers the best bet. There is a folder for each individual and it holds all pictures, articles and documentation as well as an individual summary and pedigree. Documents that pertain to more than one individual are duplicated and put in the folder of each. All originals are in archival page protectors. If two individuals have the same name - the birthdate is added to facilitate filing. When a new individual is found, a file for them is started immediately.
In order to identify 'where' individuals fit, A notebook is kept of family group sheets and some pedigree and descendent charts.
They use Roots Magic for organizing digitally ( as do I) because it handles huge amounts of data very easily as well as handling scanned documents and such.
