ARC TBC - Who's the father ???

Post by apowell »

Hi everyone,

I have a problem working out who was the father of my Great Grandmother Sarah Ann Jewkes/Jukes born Dudley abt 1873 and was looking for any help or advice.

I have a copy of my Great Grandmother marriage certificate who married in Tipton, 1890, stated her father was Samuel Jukes (profession Baker). The problem is that Sarah Ann's mother was Sarah Ann Brown born 1839, Dudley who married William Jewkes born 1835, Dudley in 1858 Dudley. I found them on the 1861 census with two daughters Phebe & Mary Ann Jukes living with Sarah Ann's parents William & Mary Ann Brown in Bath St, Dudley.

On the 1871 census Sarah Ann and her two daughters are still living with her parents in Bath St, Dudley but William Jukes isn't with them, however I found him living with his mother near in Dudley.

The 1881 census is really confusing because Sarah Ann is living in Fountain St, Dudley with her mother and two new children my Sarah Ann & Joseph Jukes and a lodger Samuel Dakin born 1836 Castle Donington, Leicestershire. I've been unable to locate William Jukes (father) anywhere on the 1881 census returns and this brings into doubt if he was the father of the two younger children Sarah Ann & Joseph Jewkes. What is further confusing me is that on the 1891 & 1901 census returns their mother Sarah Ann is a housekeeper to this Samuel Dakin with no sign of the father William Jewkes. Sarah Ann as stated also gave her father's name Samuel Jukes occupation Baker which was the very same profession given by Samuel Dakins on the census returns. Did she state this because Samuel was a father figure to her from a young age or was he in fact her mothers common law husband and her father. I found Samuel Dakin living in Dudley from the 1871 census return until his death in 1908.

I would like to find out where William Jewkes/Jukes was on the 1881 + census returns or a death entry which would help confirm who the father was of Sarah Ann Jukes/ Dakin my Great Grandmother.

Any ideas ???

Kind regards
Adrian

I don't know how the marriage certificates were filled in, but if Sarah was illiterate, and somebody asked for her father's name and she answered Samuel (meaning Dakin), the person filling in the certificate might have assumed she meant Jukes/Jewkes.
Sometimes the errors on certificates are because people made the wrong assumptions!

Could you post the 1871 census, can't see a William with his mother.

There is a William Jewkes on the probate calender for 4th july 1887, he was living in Terry Street, Dudley and the will was proved by his brother a Luke Jewkes.

Yes a very good point and Sarah was illiterate because she made a mark for her name on the marriage certificate.

The Jewkes/Jukes families around the Dudley area are numerous and a pain to sort out but William is a Boarder with his mother Ann and John Sorrow (I think his brother-in-law) is the Head living at 19 Church St, Dudley :

Name: William Jewkes
Age: 32
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839
Relation: Boarder
Where born: Dudley, Worcestershire, England
Registration district:
Dudley
Sub-registration district:
Dudley
ED, institution, or vessel:
13
Household schedule number:
16
Piece:
3011
Folio:
129
Page Number:

I just noticed on the census returns he's listed as unmarried ??

I attempted to find a baptisim entry for Sarah Ann & Joseph Jewkes/Dakin but no luck :?

Many thanks for your help :P

Don't forget that the census is only a snapshot of what was happening on the day of the census, so people who might normally be living together are actually apart on that day for a variety of reasons.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.
