ARC TBC...The many wives of Thomas BRADFORD (B.1802 Sedgley)

Post by expat66 »

Please help!....getting totally tied up in knots with this one!
Don't think this BRADFORD family are on BCC tree, though you do have some Sedgley BRADFORDS on there?

In 1841 I have
Gospel End St, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England
Thomas BRADFORD(36)nailer,
Elizabeth(30)nailer,
Thomas(14)nailer, John(10)nailer, Eliza(8), Sarah(2), James(1) all born in County

Then in 1851
Gospel End St, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England
John HUGHES(22) puddler,
wife Eliza(18),
daughter Sarah Ann (7mths),
sister-in-law Sarah BRADFORD(12),
father-in-law Thomas BRADFORD(49) widower....all born Sedgley

Then in 1861
Bilston St, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England
Thomas BRADFORD(59) nailmaker,
wife Mary(55) nailmaker,
son Joseph(10) .
boarder Thomas BROWN(22)unmarried iron roller...all born Sedgley

There are many trees on Ancestry which have Thomas BRADFORD marrying Catherine TINSLEY in 1821 and Elizabeth WEDGE in 1837, though I haven't been able to find where they got these from
Then what about that wife Mary on the 1861 census?.... did he have 3 wives?

I think it is the same Thomas BRADFORD....as there is a James BRADFORD living next door on the 1861 census...born 1840... & Thomas had a son same age same name? ( see 1841 census)

Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Well... managed to find a bit more...

Using IGI....and 'Staffordshire' rather than 'Sedgley'.... I came up with the following marriages..

11 Jun 1821...St. Peter's, Wolverhampton... Thomas BRADFORD & Catherine TINSLEY

24 Jul 1837... St. Peter's, Wolverhampton... Thomas Widower BRADFORD ( B.1802..age 35 years)..(father Benjamin)...bride...Elizabeth WELCH (B.1811..age 26)..bride's father J W WELCH

19 Jun 1853.... Wolverhampton....Thomas BRADFORD & Mary Ann CLARK

I am not really familiar with the area but Wolverhampton looks pretty close to Sedgley on the map

The marriage I really needed was the 1837 one to Elizabeth... as she would appear to be my husband's great great great grandmother. The groom's father ties up with what I have already in my tree... I have his father as Benjamin BRADFORD.

So... I'm going to run with that for now

Now I'm a stuck on this Elizabeth WELCH

Those trees on Ancestry have Elizabeth WEDGE not WELCH.... and there are WEDGEs living near the BRADFORDS in 1841.

There is also a record on IGI for an Elizabeth WEDGE christened 1 Apr 1810...parents James WEDGE and Mary... in Sedgley.

So..is it possible that the marriage record has her surname wrong and it should be WEDGE not WELCH?

Hmm :?

Those Sedgley Bradfords are my relatives and they are usually easy to sort out.

The registration district for Sedgley is Dudley until 1935 and then it changes to Rowley Regis.

Marriages being registered in Wolverhampton are common but the births are nearly always Dudley if the parents live in Sedgley.

Thanks for the info. Mark.
I feel fairly confident about that Wolverhampton marriage now.
