My problem is that I cannot find a birth registration. My grandfather Averal James Apted was born on 17th February 1886 (according to him). However, the first record of his existence appears in the 1901 Census aged 13, next being baptised at the age of 14 the following year. I have details of marriage in 1909, passage to New Zealand in 1916, WW1 service with the NZ army, subsequent emigration to Canada then USA in the 1930s, and finally death in USA in 1984.

Would he have needed a passport to serve in the NZ expeditionary force in WW1, or to emigrate to North America. If so would he have needed to have a birth certificate to get the passport in the early part of the 20th Century.
I want to prove that he does really belong to the family he was living with, but how to do that without a birth certificate?

If anyone has a good idea of how I can proceed I will be very grateful - Ideas please!

Looking at the parish register it appears he was living in the same house as when he was baptised in 1902.

14 Mornington Road.

His fiance is living at No 15.

His father is deceased and was a builder (which matches the baptism).

Contance's father, Thomas ALbert, is a Police Constable.

Looking at the Passenger Manifest......he is travelling 3rd class. His intended country of residence is Canada. He was still living at 14 Mornington Rd.

There might be extra information in the Ellis Island records. I will see if I can find him....

The Ellis Island manifest says his place place of residence was Wellington, New Zealand and he is an English citizen.

He claims not to be an Anarchist or a Polygamist!!! (I love the American manifests).

He is visitng a friend in Canada. A Mr H.E.Thomas of 83 Bloor(?) Street, West Toronto, Ontario.

He is still married.

His Canadian Manifest also gives the address in Ontario.

He says his next of kin is Miss Alice Apted, his SISTER, of 14 Mornington Road.

His Social Security entry give his date of birth as the 17th February 1887....not 1888 like his Baptism.

His Naturalisation papers don't give his date of birth.

On his entry to the USA from Canada he says he is a Canadian citizen?

HIs wife is living at 15 Mornington Road which was his address when signed up for the new Zealand Army. So it looks like they lived in both houses.

That birth in Surrey is not him. That person was Albert William James Apted.

Since the social service has him dying in 1987 he would have had his 100th birthday if born 1886 or 1887.

I assume that would have been noticed in the local papers in the USA....
