Maul Cherster?

Post by Carol »

Some of you may recall I was pondering a while back why my Grandfather was recorded as being born in Manchester on the 1901 census when all the rest of his numerous family came from Aston (sorry not quite BC but Midlands anyway). There are no known connections to Manchester within the family. The other family members are from Molsey, Aston and Erdington-all sort of Birminghamish.
Recently I've found the transcript of the 1911 census (sorry not bought original as credit ran out) but his birth place is shown as Maulcherster. This makes me think perhaps it is a local place name not far from Aston Birmingham that I have not heard of . I've googled it and found nothing. Does anyone have any clues-maybe Mally will recognise it?

Moseley, Aston and Erdington - Yes!
but, sorry Carol, I've never heard of Maulcherster and I can't think of anywhere it even sounds like :?

The only place I can come up with is maybe Alcester, Warwickshire - not sure but I think about 25 miles from Birmingham?

Hi Mally,

Thanks yes-typo- Moseley. I shall just have to buy the original and see for myself-seems likely it is a transcript error.

The same 1911 census gives his father's occ as "Shie scale grinder" . Seen the scale grinder bit elsewhere -any clues what this was? To do with the metal "toy" industries of Brum I should think.

Hi Carol,
Do you think it was Mancetter? A good tip I was given on a Familiy History course years ago was to try writing it in the style it's written in on the document yourself, this might help, as our writing styles are so different now. Best of luck.

Hi Carol, there's a Chester Road north of Aston, Erdington area where Spagetti Junction now is, the place name could be 'something' on the Chester Road. I am always fascinated by some of the old addresses, think they were often just local landmarks, or one man's personal description of his abode rather than anything official :!: Best Wishes linell.

Hi Carol, well it has to be miss-transcribed, which is a good starting point :!: Let us know what you come up with, all best wishes from linell.
