Hello!!!

Post by lurchergirly »

Hi everyone, I have browsed (or been nosy) on here before but today I decied to join in. I'm quite new to all this so sorry if I make a mess of it all. I am researching my maternal Black Country ancestors - Berrington Jewkes Talbot Cope. My brick wall at the moment is a marriage certificate for my GGGrandparents; Rebecca Jukes(1846) & William Berrington(1845). Their first child Maria Welch Berrington was born in 1866 ( I was told the Welch was because Rebecca's best friend was called Maria Welch) so have been looking arround that date. The only thing I have found is William Beddington / Hannah Jewkes in 1865. William's elder sister Martha Berrington married Henry Langford in 1863 as Beddington - is this change of spelling usual? As for the Hannah Mum once told me that Rebecca had a different christian name at birth but I can't remember what it was.

Do you have the marriage for Hannah and William Beddington - if not, it might be worth adding it for a lookup. Do you have any of their children's birth certificates? Name changes are quite usual, especially in the black country, with the strong accents. It's not the people that change their names, but the officials who write them down. I have seen Jukes spelled as Jewkes and Rebecca may have had two Christian names.

I have added a family to BCC this morning and the name is different on their marriage, one of their children's birth registrations and almost every census - it changes from Warr to Ward to Warrs.
