Smile of the Week

Post by Antie Em »

Have to share this with you - Jonathan, Aged 11 has been doing his SATS this week and he feels comfortable that he has done well. He suffers from a condition that affects his ability to concentrate for long periods and has extra help at school. This was a difficult week for him, where we have tried to keep him calm and motivated.

His favourite pasttime is collecting insects. We have great fun building homes for spiders, stick insects, he even likes collecting woodlice

So imagine his delight, when some little "visitors" set up home in his hair.

His mom rang me the other night to ask what nits looked like - so I explained what they and their eggs looked like. Lisa said - yes thats it - Jonathan has them. She took him straight to the Chemist for the lotion and applied this at night to be washed off in the morning. She took him to school next day - worried that she might have to keep him off school during this important time. The Head said not to worry - there are always a few kids at school with them. So off to school he went and told everyone that would listen about these little insects that were living on him - this is another sympton of his condition - he can't keep secrets or keep quiet for very long.

They have now gone, but he's really upset because he would have liked to have kept some for pets.

You have to love him.

Would that be Asperger Syndrome? My nephew has that and his fascination is with electronics.

I hate the chemicals they use for Head Lice. Whenever one of my daughters came home with the blighters we all had to use the "special shampoo" for a few days.

I ended up buying one of the electric combs that zapped the critters.

We had to have a special shampoo because of the medication he needs and he also suffers from Asthma. We were worried in case Elisabeth caught them - Jonathan's hair is really short - but Elisabeth's is waist length. He promised not to get to close to her - he doesn't really need an excuse for that - and he also promised not to get to close to the cat. We thought that was particularly nice. I didn't know about electric combs.

My youngest had a terrible infestation or two when she was at play school. To add insult to injury she was allergic to the saliva of the lice and got red lumps as well!

I used the recommended shampoo first time round but then she got them again after a few months and I mixed tea tree oil (and perhaps lavender too) with olive oil, combed that through and then wrapped her hair in cling film for a while. It worked just as well as the shampoo if you ask me.

We all got "de scurft" from one of my daughters when she was about 8 or 9.
Six of us all waiting to see the Dermatologist!! Most embarrassing in the waiting room you could tell other patients knew why we were there!!
A daily dousing of white powder got rid of it within a few days. The Dermatogist said it was a beast that got in your skin and you have to kill it!!! Contagious as well.
We'd just had a new bed and the electrician came to fit lights around the mirrors on the ceiling and i left him to it.After about 30minutes i went upstairs to see how he was getting on and he was lying on our bed looking at himself in the mirror!!
I never told him what we'd got but i saw him scratching himself as he walked to his van!! Serves him right for lying on our brand new bed in his overalls!!

On your bed looking at himself in the mirror?

Do you have mirrors on the ceiling?

Kinky.

Someone at work told Lisa about the tea tree oil - so she's got some in, just in case, I'll tell her about your remedy as well.

Must be a sign of the times when kids get excited about going on a bus and getting head lice :-)

One of mine started out loving all creatures great and small, he's now gone onto more exotic stuff and one of his 'pets' is a scorpion, unfortunately it was pregnant, (he didn't think it unfortunate) and at the last count he had 18 of the lovely creatures.

Dudley Zoo now have a Discovery Centre - which is great for kids - it allows them to interact with the animals. Jonathan's favourite was to meet the snakes - my daughter and son in law don't like snakes, so I got to take him in to hold one of them - usually a corn snake. The last time we went, Health & Safety had stopped them doing this, he was really disappointed, so asked if he could have one to keep at home. This request didn't meet with parental approval, but he is getting some hermit crabs instead. Suppose I'll be the one to help him take care of them.
