ARC TBC - Susan Stocket

Post by Stockett »

I recently found a reference to a Susan Stocket, da. and coh. of Sir Lewis Stocket of co. Kent who married Edward Lutwych of Salop in the book "Collections for a History of Staffordshire in 1614 and 1663-64". It is on page 204, which deals with the pedigree of the family of Lutwich of Blakelow.

The brick wall is that I have researched Sir Lewis Stocket (who was Surveyor of the Works for Queen Elizabeth I) pretty thoroughly and cannot find a daughter named Susan. I have even paid for and downloaded his will and had it transcribed. There is no mention of a Susan or Edward Lutwich. This Lewis died in 1578.

Edward Lutwich died in 1615 per his probate record. He had three sons: Edward, Stockett, and Richard.

I have found two Stockett Lutwich's -- the one referred to is a rector/minister who is listed in "Oxford University Alumni, 1500-1886". Based on the information in that document, he was born c. 1573-74. I also found several references to him at the National Archives of the UK on-line.

The other Stockett Lutwich was a mariner and died in 1712. I have his will.

If Susan Stocket Lutwich was his mother, she would have been born in the 1550's or a little earlier. Sir Lewis Stockett was born about 1530. His children that I have are: Joanna, John, Aylworth, Humphrey, Thomas.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A Susan Wailand married and Edward Lutwick in London in 1567 at St Dunstan In The West according to Boyd's Misc. Series.

Edward Lutwich'a baptism was in Munslow, Shropshire on the 1st Feb 1550.

There are 209 Family Trees on Ancestry that have Sir Lodivicus Lewis Stockett.

Not a single one lists a Susan, Susanna, Sue, Suzan as his daughter.

Coheiress.

This would indicate she is the eldest child.

Thanks for the replies. Interestingly, Edward Wailande was the first husband of Lucye Marwood, who, secondly, married Sir Lewys Stockett. She and Edward had two sons (mentioned in her will): Edmond and Henry/Henricus. Edward Wailande, Lucy's husband, died in 1551. Per the National Archives of the UK, he was a scrivener. I don't have an exact date of birth, but it is probably around 1524.

I have found a "bazillion" Edward Lutwyche/Lutwich's and am trying to get them in the correct order and tied together. There are many Richard's, John's, and Mary's as well.

I purchased and downloaded Edward Lutwyche's will dated 1614. I am planning on trying to do a rough transcription myself. I don't know how far I will get.

The Wailande connection is a great clue. I haven't been able to find that source myself, but am working on it.

By the way, many of the Lewis/Lovodicus Stockett trees at Ancestry.com have important errors. I used some of them as a base, and then documented the facts from outside sources such as Canterbury Archives, National Archives of the UK, and British History On-Line.

If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know.

After my last post, I did some more searching and found two records for a marriage between Edward Lutwyche and Susan. The two dates are 7 Apr 1567 and 8 Apr 1567, both at St. Dunstan in the West, London. Both are clearly referring to Edward and Susan, but are from different pages or documents. I tried to attach the images to this post, but they are too large. I will work on compressing them and send them later. I found both on Ancestry.com. I have not yet found the source given to me in an earlier post -- the one that was the key to starting

Susan's name is spelled Wayland in one image and Wailande in the other. I am still very intrigued by Sir Lewys Stocket's family and life. I would be so happy if I could find Lewys' father, brother, sister, etc. His life is so well documented that I am amazed that I can't find those persons. I would also like more information on Sir Lewys' wife, Lucy. Her parents, too, are a brick wall.

I think Ancestry have recently added Boyds to their records but I don't know if they have the images.

Sorry to be somewhat dense, but I looked on Ancestry.co.uk and couldn't find Boyds; nor could I find it on Google Books. Can you give me the full name of the volume?

I did find two marriage records on Ancestry, taken from Guildhall, St. Dunstan in the West Composite Register, but I am hoping that Boyd's can be helpful in the future.

Thank you very much, Mark. I tried Find My Past UK after doing a Bing search for Boyd's, but I must have used incorrect terms, because I received 0 results for both Susan and Edward. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me.

I'm now trying to find a record of Susan's death/burial. I had help from Maths Girl with transcribing Edward Lutwyche's will, and it does not mention a wife. It does mention Edward's sons: Stockett Lutwyche and Edward Lutwyche; and states that Stockett is the younger son, that Stockett was married at the time of the writing of the will, and that Stockett had a daughter.

His older son, Edward, was named heir and Executor of his father's will. A brother, John Lutwyche, was also named. The probatum statement at the bottom is written in Latin, which rules me out as a transcriber for that part. The transcription is a work in progress.

I've been trying to work on Edward Wailande's will, but it is much more difficult to transcribe. Thus far, I have a few words and a lot of blanks. I have not yet encountered Susan in the will.

Any further help with Susan would be greatly appreciated.
