Help needed - Ann Sutton

Post by dolly »

Can anyone help with this scenario please??

My 3rd great grandparents were George R W Sutton (1803-1870) and Hannah Bestwick (1815)
They were married 1840 in Ashbourne Originally from Warslow, Staffordshire
I think George's father was also George Sutton
Hannah Bestwick's father was John Bestwick and he married Ann (don't know maiden name)
I have since found the following marriage on FamilySearch.org

John Bestwick - International Genealogical Index - British Isles
Gender: Male Marriage: 08 JUL 1806 Alstonfield, Stafford, England

He married Ann SUTTON!! I'm hoping that Ann was not the sister of George Sutton senior as that would make George's son, George Sutton and his wife, Hannah Bestwick cousins!!!

Jimmy (thankyou) has informed me that cousins did sometimes marry
Were there more Suttons in the same area at that time? It seems unlikely.

Hi Dolly,

lots of my family married cousins

I've just had a quick flick through the IGI and a lot of the John Bestwick 1806 seem to be submitted, these can be a little unreliable, you need to try and find an Extracted record if poss and even then try a verify it.

1st cousins marriages are still legal in England and Australia although debate has been raging for years about the increased genetic risk to any offspring.

Charles Darwin married his first cousin!

On the debate of the risk to children, I tend to listen to the physicians from Pakistan where about 60% of the marriages are to 1st cousins.

They know there is an increased risk to the child and any western medicine mumbo jumbo is just theoretical.

Cousin marriage is common in the Middle East however, there are potential genetic risks on their children and when it is repeated in the next generation. There are also lack of social approval with this kind of marriage.

The IGI submitted entries often give the wife's Married name when they have no maiden name, hence she was Mrs Ann Sutton, more than likely anyway.
