Do you have the later census's? Looks like Jacob's wife's name is Theresa. On one of the census's he's down as being born in Windmill End, which ties in with the 1841 census.

It's a bit late but have you tried GARBUTT? It's not uncommon on Teeside, another industrial area.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.

and opening topic on Jacob sidaway the father as think he is on bcc already
