A followup to my previous posting regarding the marriage of Amos Goode and Eliza Williams from Halesowen. I sent away for the marriage certificate of Amos GOULD and Eliza Williams on the off chance that it might be mine. This is the result:
Marriage: The Parish Church of Edgbaston, Warwick
27 August 1849 - Amos Gould - Full Age - Bachelor - Horse Dealer - Quinton - Father's name and profession: left blank
Eliza Williams - Full Age - Spinster ------- Edgbaston " " " " " "
Signed: Amos Gould's x Mark - Eliza Williams
Witnesses: David Smith - Sarah Smith's Mark
I. Spooner, Vicar
I was surprised that the details about the father's were blank.
Pleased to see "Horse Dealer" and "Quinton" because Amos GOODE was a horse dealer from Quinton.
The fact that Amos could not read or write explains the discrepancy in the name.
I phoned the Birmingham Registry Office and Mr Yates told me that I. Spooner was notorious for leaving ages and fathers off the record because he didn't approve of the registration.
I am 99% sure that this is the marriage I am seeking. Any ideas or suggestions as to what more I could do would be gratefully received.

Re: Marriage: Amos Goode and Eliza Williams
Thanks Jimmy. You are right - this is my GG Grandfather, Amos Goode's family. I have all the information about him in all the census's, his parents, siblings and children. What I am trying to find out is his marriage date. There is no Amos GOODE and Eliza Williams in the marriage registration indexes. So I sent off for this certificate for Amos GOULD and Eliza Williams. It seems to fit. I couldn't find an Amos Gould in the 1851 census.
Does anyone know how I go about searching the Banns for St Bartholomew's, Edgbaston, since they were married by Banns? The Vicar wasn't forthcoming with the details so I was wondering if the Banns might be more informative.
Thanks, Hilary

You can purchase the fiche from here Hilary:-

I doubt that the Banns will give any further information, the ones I have seen just give the bride and grooms names and dates when the Banns were read, but you never know!
I think you are worrying too much about the surnames Gould and Goode, most of my Ancestors names are spelt differently, it all depended on who was filling in the forms, I would think that is the same family, definitely. HTH from Linell.

I agree with Linell -- have you tried saying those two names in a strong West Midlands accent -- with a cold -- you could easily spell them either way!

Thank you both for your input. I think you are probably right - I am worrying too much about the name. Problem is I am a stickler for detail as I have made a few errors in the past.
