Keeping strictly to the point here.
I know from family notes and trees that there was a Samuel Little born to John Little and Isabella in Dublin.....but not his birth date.
My father's tree has him as the second brother after Matthew in 1872. My uncle says he was the older brother of Andrew, born 1878. But there were more children born until 1887, and neither of then gives a date. The most likely gap in births is 1874 (A girl) - 1878.
I can't find anyone who fits in the two Irish censuses, so did he leave Ireland?
One death recorded of a child Samuel Little, but he lived 1882 - 1885, and my uncle says he 'didn't go to South Africa' as others did - which does imply that he grew up!
I have looked there too, but the records aren't great, and my uncle was wrong about Matthew, who he also said didn't go. However my distant cousin there has looked in Pretoria, and found nothing.
There's one Samuel born in Dublin South - right place - in 1874.....no parents given.
No possible references in the 19c Dublin newspaper.
Emigrations - many Sam Littles went to the USA, but noone I can place.
I am floundering here. Maybe I just don't have quite enough information....? - Alison

Hello Peter.
No censuses. John Little (a Scot, from Dumbarton via Glasgow) went to Dublin 1870, his first wife died and he married Isabella Barr in South Dublin 1871 (record found).
His stepmother Janet died at his house in Pigeon House Road, Ringsend in 1881 (death cert)
He was at 83 Thorncastle Street in 1894 (Thoms Directory - bottle manufacturer.)
In between he had children Matthew 1872, Isabella 1873, Elizabeth 1874, Ellen 1876, Andrew 1878, Mary 1880. (Ellen, Mary and Isabella died). Jean Grace and Agnes in 1883, '85, and '87.
And Samuel.
John and Isabella with many of the family left for South Africa in 1896. (family records here and in SA.)

Is it possible to get a birth certificate if you don't have a date, just the parents?
I have the probable address too. - Alison
