ARC TBC..........Amos Goode -New Member from Gloucestershire

Post by hiljcol »

Hi everyone! Found you quite by accident - was googling the name of one of my ancestors, AMOS GOODE from Halesowen, and his name came up on this website. I have been struggling to find his marriage (around 1849) for ages as it is not in the marriage indexes. Someone has posted a marriage for Amos Goode and Eliza Williams in 1849, but the surname is GOULD not Goode. Can anyone enlighten me?

I was born in Staffordshire and some of my surname interests are: MASKERY, BOURNE, SEDGLEY, RATCLIFFE, from the Stoke/Hanley/Dilhorne areas. Also GOODE and WILLIAMS from Halesowen. On my mother's side I am interested in BOURKE/MCGRATH AND BROWN from Ireland and OWENS from Bristol.

It would be great to hear from anyone!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sometimes you get similar names on marriages and other registrations. Not everyone could read and write in the early days and when people gave their names to the official who was writing the details, the official often wrote what he thought he heard and the people getting married, if they couldn't read, had no way of checking.

My Great Grandmother was Rebecca Humphries, born in 1875 and on various registration documents and census records, her name was spelled either Humphries or Humphreys.

Hello, thank you for your welcome. Yes, this is definitely my great, great grandfather, Amos Goode. Thanks for moving him to BCC - I had a look - I have the names of other children and dates. How do you go about updating the tree?

That is right, I found him amongst all that census and probate information posted regarding James Williams (Amos's father in law). I also found a link to The Guardian Newspaper dated 1875 which stated that Amos Goode went bankrupt. Bit of a shock!

I don't have a marriage date but I always assumed it was about 1849 because his daughter Kate was born in 1850. I saw the one posted here for September 1849 between Amos GOULD and Eliza Williams at Kings Norton. The name was a surprise as well as Kings Norton, since Eliza also came from Halesowen. They had eleven children, some of whom died young, but the older children are not in the birth indexes. I did however, look up their births under Gould and found some matches. It would be great if they are the right ones - I guess the only way to be sure is buy the marriage certificate and birth certificates. Any suggestions?

Kings Norton Registration District covered a wide area, including the Northfield and Quinton area where Amos lived:-

As for adding to the tree you will have to speak to Northern Lass.

Marriages can be looked up in the Church Register if anyone is going to the Archives, but yes you would need to send for any birth certificates.

I have just written a reply but lost it somehow. Anyway, thanks for the replies and suggestions. I thought it might be Christchurch, Quinton too. Yesterday, I called a lady in Birmingham partly responsible for transcribing christenings, marriages and burials in Christchurch Quinton. The burials are on the internet but not the others. A few years ago, I asked her to look up christenings for 5 children not in the registration indexes - she came back with christening dates for SIX children. Unable to find a marriage for Amos Goode and Eliza Williams. So.. yesterday I asked her to have a look for Amos GOULD and Eliza Williams - I am waiting for a telephone call.

Amos and Eliza had 11 children - some died - the younger ones were christened at St John's Halesowen. I might just send away for the marriage certificate to see if I have any luck. I will keep you posted. Thanks!
