Re: Where to start?
Hi, all.
I couldn't wait to call on my mum so I've rung her and the children's names are as follows ;
Constance,
Leslie Austin,
Margaret,
Annie Laura,
Maurice,
Phyllis,
Winifred
Eric William (my dad)
Doreen doesn't fit (at least not that we know about!!)
My mum has also admitted that she only beleived that my grandmother was called Margaret and that my dad may never have actually told her what she was called.
But that's brilliant I'm really grateful for all the help.
Can someone tell me how I now go backward in time to discover about my great grandparents, ie my dad's parents?

If you subscribe to 'Find My Past' cicero, you can view your family on the 1911 Census and then backwards, checking Marriages on Free BMD as you go. HTH from Linell.

You perhaps ought to confirm with certificates the facts that we have proposed so far especially as you don't have a confirmed name for your grandmother yet. -- marriage/birth certificates would also give parents's names which is what you are looking for next.

Re: Where to start?
Hi, guys
Well since my last visit I've discovered quite a lot but have got stuck on two things and wonder if anyone can help please?
After help and advice from some kind folks on here I have traced my father's family back as far as the 1851 Census viz : Samuel Hardy aged 38 living in Worsley, Lancs. (now Salford) at Wardley Lane. If what I found is correct it seems he was a widower and was this just 7 months after the birth of my great, great, grandfather Moses. (must have been a religious family).
I have looked for the family on the 1841 census but drawn a blank.
I assume that his wife must have died during or after the birth of moses but without the 1841 census I don't know her name.
Can any kind soul advise where to go next or check to see if they can find some more info. on my behalf in case I've missed something?
Any help, info. and advice gratefully received.
Regards.

Re: Where to start?
Hi cicero, could you post the 1851 Census you found for Samuel please so we can see what you are looking at. Did you send for any certificates to verify info so far? Linell.

Hi, Linell
Thank you for replying as requested see below :
Samuel Hardy age 38 Coal miner and if I read it properly widower.
Martha age 19
James age 17
Leah age 15
Miriam age 12
William age 10
John age 8
Alice age 5
Moses age 7 months (my great, great grandfather) I believe)
When I try for 1841 I can't get any matches for Samuel or Martha or the other older kids.
Any help gratefully accepted as it's a bit frustrating.
Many thanks.

Re: Where to start?
Might need the birth certificate for one of the children, to find out who the mother is
There's no place like home ......

Hi, Antie Em
You are probably right about that. When did we start to issue birth, marriage and death certificates do you know?
I assume that pre the 1841 census it's a matter of church records and ...well what else?
Regards.

Re: Where to start?
Certificates and registration began in 1837, but didn't become compulsary until later. Some people also thourght that if the children were christened it meant that they didn't have to register the birth.

Hi, peterd
You have been busy!
You've lost me a little what does WOR/2/51 mean (for example) and where have these names come from please?
What do the dates represent?
Cheers and thank you.
